Does TablePlus Have an ER Diagram? Options and Workarounds

People search for a TablePlus ER diagram tutorial, but the TablePlus documentation does not describe an ER diagram feature. This page sets out what the vendor does document, the one changelog entry that mentions a diagram, how to inspect relationships in TablePlus today, and which tools document a full ER diagram feature.

Steps and facts checked 8 October 2026 against the vendor's official documentation. Versions covered: TablePlus for macOS 26.10.22, Windows 26.10.2, Linux 1.7.0; PostgreSQL 18, MySQL 8.4, SQL Server 2025. Next review due April 2027. Menus, shortcuts and prices change between releases; check the vendor's documentation for your version.
Short answer
  • The TablePlus documentation has no ER diagram page, and no documented steps for generating an entity relationship diagram.
  • The macOS changelog for version 7.1.8 (10 June 2026) lists "Added native diagram" without describing it; the Windows and Linux changelogs contain no diagram entry. We do not describe steps we cannot verify.
  • In TablePlus you can still inspect relationships: the table structure view shows and creates foreign keys, and the Definition button shows the CREATE TABLE statement.
  • For a real diagram, DBeaver, pgAdmin and MySQL Workbench document ER diagram features; a catalog query also lists every foreign key in a database.
How we know: Research-based: we checked the full TablePlus documentation index, the TablePlus macOS, Windows and Linux changelogs, and the documentation of the alternative tools and database catalogs named here on 8 October 2026. We have not used TablePlus for this page, so we describe only documented features. The SQL queries use documented catalog views; we have not run them for this guide.

Does TablePlus have an ER diagram feature?

Not one that TablePlus documents. The TablePlus documentation index covers the interface, connections, tables, columns, constraints, indexes, triggers, views, functions, import and export, backup, user management, a metrics board, the query editor, preferences, plugins and licensing. None of its pages describes an ER diagram, a schema diagram or a visual relationship view, so there is no official TablePlus ER diagram tutorial to follow.

One changelog entry is worth knowing about. The macOS release notes for version 7.1.8 (10 June 2026) include the line "Added native diagram", next to export to Excel and JSON import. The note does not say what the diagram shows, where it is in the app, or whether it draws foreign key relationships, and the Windows and Linux changelogs have no matching entry. A much older macOS note (build 330, July 2020) mentions an updated JavaScript API for "TablePlus Diagram". Until TablePlus documents the feature, we would not plan work around it; if you use a recent macOS build, check the vendor's documentation and release notes for an update.

This matches our TablePlus review, which lists the lack of documented ER diagram features as a limitation.

How to see table relationships in TablePlus today

TablePlus documents several ways to see and edit foreign keys one table at a time:

  1. Structure view. Open a table and click Structure at the bottom, or press Cmd + Ctrl + ]. The constraint documentation shows a foreign_key field for each column; click it and choose Create a foreign key on column to define a relationship, then press Cmd + S to commit.
  2. Definition. In the structure view, the Definition button at the top right shows the CREATE TABLE statement, including its foreign key clauses.
  3. Dump Table plugin. Install it from Plugin > Manage Plugins... (Cmd + L), then right-click a table and choose Copy Script As > CREATION.
  4. Foreign key navigation (Linux). The Linux changelog for 1.3.7 (November 2025) records support for foreign key navigation.

The shortcuts above are the macOS ones from the TablePlus documentation. On Windows and Linux, use the Structure button at the bottom of the table view, which works the same way.

List every relationship with one query

A diagram is mostly a picture of the foreign keys. You can get the same information as a table by querying the database catalog in the TablePlus query editor, then sort or export it. Each engine documents its own catalog: PostgreSQL's pg_constraint stores foreign key constraints (type f), MySQL's KEY_COLUMN_USAGE table describes which key columns have constraints, and SQL Server's sys.foreign_keys has one row per foreign key.

PostgreSQL: foreign keys in the current database
SELECT conrelid::regclass AS table_name,
       conname AS constraint_name,
       pg_get_constraintdef(oid) AS definition
FROM pg_constraint
WHERE contype = 'f'
ORDER BY table_name, constraint_name;
MySQL: foreign keys in the database mydb
SELECT TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, CONSTRAINT_NAME,
       REFERENCED_TABLE_NAME, REFERENCED_COLUMN_NAME
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.KEY_COLUMN_USAGE
WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'mydb'
  AND REFERENCED_TABLE_NAME IS NOT NULL
ORDER BY TABLE_NAME, CONSTRAINT_NAME;
SQL Server (T-SQL): foreign keys in the current database
SELECT fk.name AS constraint_name,
       OBJECT_NAME(fk.parent_object_id) AS table_name,
       OBJECT_NAME(fk.referenced_object_id) AS referenced_table
FROM sys.foreign_keys AS fk
ORDER BY table_name, constraint_name;

Tools that document ER diagrams

If you need a diagram you can arrange, print or share, use a tool that documents the feature alongside TablePlus. You can keep TablePlus for daily querying and editing.

ER diagram support documented by other tools (vendor documentation, October 2026)

DBeaverDiagrams for existing tables and schemas and custom diagrams, to explore structure and analyse relationshipsMany engines

Which approach should you use?

In our view: for a quick check of how two or three tables connect, the TablePlus structure view is enough. For documentation or onboarding, run the catalog query and export it, or use a diagram tool. For designing a new schema visually, choose a modelling tool from our ER diagram tools guide. If ER diagrams are central to your work, the DBeaver vs TablePlus and DataGrip vs TablePlus comparisons and the TablePlus alternatives page are the next places to look.

Frequently asked questions

Can TablePlus generate an ER diagram?

The TablePlus documentation does not describe an ER diagram feature. The macOS changelog for version 7.1.8 mentions a "native diagram" without explaining it, so we cannot confirm what it does.

How do I see foreign keys in TablePlus?

Open the table's structure view (the Structure button at the bottom of the table, or Cmd + Ctrl + ] on macOS) and look at the foreign_key field, or click Definition to read the CREATE TABLE statement.

Is there a TablePlus ER diagram plugin?

The TablePlus plugin documentation lists an SQL formatter, Dump Table and Open URL plugins. It does not list a diagram plugin.

What is a free alternative to TablePlus for ER diagrams?

DBeaver Community documents ER diagrams for many engines, and pgAdmin documents an ERD Tool for PostgreSQL. Both are free.
