Quick verdict
Choose Fivetran if your main need is to land data from SaaS applications and databases in a cloud warehouse with as little engineering as possible, and you are happy to transform it there with SQL or dbt. Choose Talend if you need transformations before loading, data quality and stewardship in the same product, jobs that run on engines inside your own network, or you already have Talend Studio jobs. Fivetran publishes its pricing model and has a free plan; Talend is quote-based with no free edition since Talend Open Studio was retired.
Fivetran is a fully managed data movement service. You choose a source connector (a SaaS application, database, file store or event source) and a destination warehouse or lake, and Fivetran handles extraction, schema changes and incremental syncs. Its pricing page lists 700+ connectors on the Standard plan. Fivetran signed an agreement to acquire Census, a reverse ETL company, in May 2025 (Census syncs are now Fivetran Activations), and completed an all-stock merger with dbt Labs on 1 June 2026; the combined company operates as Fivetran + dbt Labs.
Talend has been part of Qlik since May 2023. Qlik sells Qlik Talend Cloud in four editions (Starter, Standard, Premium, Enterprise) covering data movement, log-based CDC, ETL and ELT transformations, API integration, data quality, catalog and governance, and keeps Talend Studio, a component-based designer that generates native code. The free Talend Open Studio was retired on 31 January 2024. Qlik also owns Stitch, a simpler ELT service that came with Talend; stitchdata.com now points new users to Qlik Talend Cloud (see Fivetran vs Stitch).
Different shapes of product. Fivetran is mainly the "E" and "L" of ELT, with transformation handled in the warehouse; Talend is a full ETL and data management suite. For the pattern itself, see ETL vs ELT.
Side by side
| Aspect | Fivetran | Talend |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Managed ELT: connectors that load data into a warehouse or lake | Enterprise integration suite: CDC, ETL and ELT, API integration, quality, governance |
| Owner | Fivetran + dbt Labs (merger completed 1 June 2026) | Qlik (since May 2023) |
| Connectors | 700+ listed on the Standard plan | Hundreds of sources and targets (Qlik's wording); hundreds of Studio components |
| Transformations | In the destination, via dbt-based Transformations; 5,000 model runs a month free | ETL or ELT, no-code in Qlik Talend Cloud (Premium and above) or in Talend Studio jobs |
| Data quality and governance | Not the focus; role-based access and enterprise security features by plan | Catalog in all editions; profiling, Trust Score, lineage and stewardship from Premium |
| Deployment | SaaS, or Hybrid Deployment (processing in your network) on the Enterprise plan | Cloud, client managed or hybrid (from Standard); Remote Engines for Studio jobs |
| Reverse ETL | Activations (formerly Census) | Application and API integration from Premium |

| Free option | Free plan (500,000 MAR) and a 14-day trial per new connection | Trial only; no free edition |
| Main trade-off | Least engineering to load data, but transformation and quality live elsewhere and costs grow with changed rows | Covers the whole integration and quality lifecycle, but more to design, operate and license |
Key differences
Managed ELT versus an integration suite
Fivetran is built around connectors that someone else maintains. You do not write extraction code or design jobs; you pick tables and a sync frequency (15 minutes minimum on Standard, 1 minute on Enterprise, per the pricing page) and Fivetran keeps the destination in step with the source. The trade-off is control: you shape the data after it lands, and sources without a connector need another approach.
Talend is designed for teams that build pipelines. In Qlik Talend Cloud you assemble no-code data movement and transformation flows; in Talend Studio you design jobs from components that read, map, cleanse and write data, and Studio generates code that runs on Talend Remote Engines or Qlik's cloud. That suits complex routing, transformations before loading, and targets that are not analytical warehouses, at the cost of more design and maintenance work.
Where transformation happens
With Fivetran, transformation is ELT: raw data lands first and is modelled in the warehouse. Fivetran's Transformations integrate with dbt Core, and after the merger with dbt Labs the companies announced dbt Core v2.0 (alpha) under the Apache 2.0 licence. A typical step after a Fivetran sync is a dbt model or plain SQL such as this, written for Snowflake:
-- Snowflake SQL: build a clean orders table from raw synced data
CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE analytics.orders AS
SELECT id AS order_id,
customer_id,
CAST(created_at AS DATE) AS order_date,
total_amount
FROM raw_shop.orders
WHERE NOT _fivetran_deleted;The _fivetran_deleted column is the system column Fivetran sets to TRUE for soft deletes when its Capture Deletes feature is enabled; check the columns for your connector in Fivetran's documentation. With Talend, you can transform in flight (ETL) or push work to the target (ELT); the Premium edition adds "automated and flexible transformations using ELT or ETL" and warehouse, lake and lakehouse automation. If business rules must be applied before data reaches the warehouse, for example masking or rejecting bad records, Talend handles that inside the pipeline.
Data quality and governance
Talend has long sold data quality alongside integration, and Qlik Talend Cloud keeps it: Premium adds profiling based on automatically recognised semantic types, the Qlik Talend Trust Score, column-level lineage and data stewardship, and Enterprise adds the broadest governance capabilities. Studio includes data quality components that can be embedded in integration jobs.
Fivetran does not position itself as a data quality or catalog product. Its plans add security and compliance features (role-based access, custom roles, customer-managed keys and PCI DSS Level 1 on Business Critical), and teams typically add tests in dbt and a separate catalog. If quality rules and stewardship workflows are a requirement, Talend covers more in one product.
Deployment and network control
Fivetran documents two deployment models: SaaS, where processing happens in Fivetran's cloud, and Hybrid Deployment, where data is processed inside your own network while Fivetran's cloud orchestrates and configures the pipelines. The pricing page lists Hybrid Deployment as an Enterprise plan feature.
Talend offers cloud, client managed or hybrid deployment from the Standard edition, and Studio jobs can be deployed to Remote Engines that you run, managed from Talend Management Console. For organisations that must keep processing on their own servers, both now have an answer, but Talend has more options for fully self-managed execution.
Pricing and licensing
Fivetran. Usage is measured in Monthly Active Rows (MAR), and each connection follows its own cost curve, so price per row falls as a connection's volume rises. Plans are Free, Standard, Enterprise and Business Critical. The Free plan includes 500,000 MAR for connections, 3,500 MAR for Activations and 5,000 transformation model runs a month. As one example from the vendor's pricing page in October 2026 (USD): Fivetran applies a $5 base charge to every standard connection with monthly usage between 1 MAR and 1M MAR (this does not apply on the Free plan). Each new connection has a 14-day free trial, and annual contracts carry discounts. We do not estimate a bill: MAR depends on how many rows change in each source.
Talend (Qlik Talend Cloud). Capacity subscriptions for the Starter, Standard, Premium or Enterprise edition, with usage measured by data volume moved, job executions and execution duration. No prices are listed on the vendor's pricing page in October 2026; each edition is quote-based, and a free trial is offered.

Where each one leads
Fivetran strengths
- Little to build or maintain: connectors and schema changes are managed for you
- Public pricing model and a free plan for small volumes
- Transformations in the warehouse with dbt, now from the same company
- Reverse ETL (Activations) in the same platform
- Hybrid Deployment option for processing inside your network
Talend strengths
- Full ETL and ELT, with transformations before or after loading
- Data quality, Trust Score, lineage and stewardship in the same suite
- Log-based CDC from the Standard edition
- Talend Studio and Remote Engines for complex jobs run in your own network
- Application and API integration as well as analytics pipelines
Limitations
Fivetran limitations
- Costs grow with changed rows per connection, which is hard to predict for busy sources
- Transformation, testing and cataloguing need dbt or other tools
- Hybrid Deployment and 1-minute syncs need the Enterprise plan
- Less control over extraction logic than a pipeline you design yourself
Talend limitations
- No published prices and no free edition since Talend Open Studio was retired
- Quality, lineage and stewardship need Premium or Enterprise
- More design and operational work than a managed connector service
- Talend Studio is a separate desktop tool with its own skills and release cycle
When to choose each
Choose Fivetran if
- You need SaaS and database data in Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift quickly
- Your team transforms data in the warehouse with SQL or dbt
- You do not want to maintain connectors or extraction code
- Volumes are modest or predictable enough for MAR pricing to make sense
- You also want reverse ETL from the same vendor
Choose Talend if
- Data must be cleansed, masked or validated before it reaches the target
- You need data quality, stewardship and lineage alongside integration
- You run Talend Studio jobs today
- Processing must run on engines you manage
- You integrate operational systems and APIs, not only analytics
When neither is right
- You want a free, self-hostable platform (source-available under Elastic License 2.0): see Airbyte vs Fivetran and Airbyte vs Talend.
- You want a visual pushdown ELT designer for a cloud warehouse: see Fivetran vs Matillion and Matillion vs Talend.
- You need enterprise integration plus master data management: see Talend vs Informatica.
- Your problem is scheduling and dependencies across tools: see Apache Airflow vs Fivetran.
Final recommendation
If the job is to replicate data into a cloud warehouse and model it there, Fivetran needs the least engineering and has the more transparent pricing model, and the dbt merger makes the load-then-transform workflow more joined up. If the job includes transformation before loading, data quality and stewardship, self-managed execution or application integration, Talend covers more of it in one suite, at the cost of more design work and a quote-based licence. Some organisations use both: Fivetran for SaaS replication and Talend for complex or governed pipelines.
Frequently asked questions
Is Fivetran an ETL tool?
Fivetran is usually described as ELT: it extracts and loads data into a destination and transformation happens there, through its dbt-based Transformations or your own SQL. It does not focus on transforming data before it is loaded.
Did Fivetran merge with dbt Labs?
Yes. The merger was announced in October 2025 and Fivetran's press release says it completed on 1 June 2026. The combined company operates as Fivetran + dbt Labs, with George Fraser as CEO and Tristan Handy as President.
Is there a free version of Talend?
Not any more. Talend Open Studio, the free open source edition, was retired on 31 January 2024. Qlik offers a free trial of Qlik Talend Cloud and Talend Studio, but no free edition.
What are Monthly Active Rows?
Fivetran's usage unit. Fivetran defines it as the number of distinct rows synced from a source to your destination in a calendar month, identified by primary key; inserts, updates and deletes count, and a row counts once per month however often it syncs. Each connection is priced on its own tiered curve. The Free plan includes 500,000 MAR a month.
Can Talend do change data capture?
Yes. Qlik Talend Cloud's Standard edition adds real-time synchronisation using log-based change data capture. Fivetran also replicates database changes incrementally through its database connectors.
