Quick verdict
Choose Matillion if your data lives in Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or BigQuery and you want a visual, code-optional designer whose transformations run inside that platform, with AI agents to help build pipelines. Choose Talend if you need to integrate many kinds of targets (not only a cloud warehouse), transform data before loading, add data quality and stewardship in the same product, or run jobs on your own engines. Matillion is the narrower, warehouse-centred tool; Talend is the broader suite.
Matillion describes its product as "cloud data integration and ETL, now autonomous". The platform formerly called the Data Productivity Cloud has been renamed Maia Foundation: Matillion's site describes it as having 150+ connectors, orchestration and governance. Maia is Matillion's name for its AI agents, which it says plan, build, test, run and fix pipelines. Maia Foundation supports Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery. The older, self-hosted Matillion ETL product still exists, and Matillion documents migration from it to Maia Foundation.
Talend has been part of Qlik since May 2023. Qlik sells Qlik Talend Cloud in four editions (Starter, Standard, Premium, Enterprise) covering data movement, log-based CDC, ETL and ELT transformations, API integration, data quality, catalog and governance, alongside Talend Studio, a component-based designer that generates native code. The free Talend Open Studio was retired on 31 January 2024.

Key differences
Warehouse-centred pushdown versus a general integration suite
Matillion is built around a cloud data platform. Its transformation page says transformations execute "directly within platforms like Snowflake, BigQuery, and Redshift", so the heavy work uses the warehouse compute you already pay for and data does not leave it for a separate engine. You design pipelines visually, or switch to SQL and Python, and Matillion mentions version control, CI/CD and dbt support. The limit is the target list: Maia Foundation supports Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery, and Matillion's documentation says Azure Synapse is not supported in Maia.
Talend does not assume a particular target. Pipelines can move data between databases, applications, files, APIs, warehouses and lakes; transformations can run in flight (ETL) or in the target (ELT); and Talend Studio jobs can embed cleansing and validation components. That breadth suits enterprises with mixed estates, including operational integration, at the cost of a larger product to learn.
What a pushdown transformation looks like
A pushdown tool generates SQL like the following and runs it in the warehouse. This example, written for Snowflake, merges a staged batch of customer changes into a reporting table; Matillion's visual components produce equivalent statements, and Talend can push similar SQL to the target or perform the same logic in its own engine before loading.
-- Snowflake SQL: upsert staged customer changes into a reporting table
MERGE INTO analytics.dim_customer t
USING staging.customer_changes s
ON t.customer_id = s.customer_id
WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET
t.email = s.email,
t.country = s.country
WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN INSERT (customer_id, email, country)
VALUES (s.customer_id, s.email, s.country); For the general difference between transforming before and after loading, see ETL vs ELT.
Data quality and governance
Talend includes data quality as a product line: Qlik Talend Cloud Premium adds profiling based on recognised semantic types, the Qlik Talend Trust Score, column-level lineage and data stewardship, and Enterprise adds the broadest governance capabilities. If business users need to review and fix records, or you need a catalog with lineage, Talend covers it.
Matillion lists orchestration and governance as part of Maia Foundation but is not positioned as a data quality or stewardship suite. Teams usually rely on tests in their transformation logic or dbt and on the cloud data platform's own governance (for example Snowflake's or Databricks' catalogs).
Deployment and the legacy products
Matillion documents two deployment models for Maia Foundation: Full SaaS, where Matillion manages all infrastructure, and Hybrid SaaS, where you install the Maia runner in your own cloud infrastructure for more control, custom libraries and data locality. The pricing page lists hybrid deployment on the Scale plan. Customers on Matillion ETL, the older product deployed in your own cloud account, face a migration to Maia Foundation; Matillion documents automated migration tooling and notes architectural differences, such as concurrency scaling with the number of runners rather than instance size.
Talend offers cloud, client managed or hybrid deployment from the Standard edition, and Talend Studio jobs can run on Remote Engines you operate, managed from Talend Management Console. Its legacy issue is different: the free Talend Open Studio was retired, so those users must move to a paid licence or another tool.
Pricing and licensing
Matillion. Three plans: Developer (for individuals, 1 developer user), Teams (5 developer users) and Scale (for large organisations, adding hybrid cloud deployment). Usage is billed in credits, which are consumed by task hours (the combined execution time of each task) and by developer users beyond those included. No prices are listed on the vendor's pricing page in October 2026. A free trial is available, and Maia can be trialled on a time-bound, fair-use basis. Remember that pushdown transformations also consume compute on your Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or BigQuery account, which those vendors bill separately.
Talend (Qlik Talend Cloud). Capacity subscriptions for the Starter, Standard, Premium or Enterprise edition, with usage measured by data volume moved, job executions and execution duration. No prices are listed on the vendor's pricing page in October 2026; each edition is quote-based, and a free trial is offered.

Where each one leads
Matillion strengths
- Transformations run inside Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or BigQuery, using their compute
- Code-optional design: visual components, SQL or Python, with dbt support
- Maia AI agents to help build, manage and orchestrate pipelines
- Full SaaS option with no infrastructure to manage
Talend strengths
- Works with many kinds of sources and targets, not only cloud data platforms
- Data quality, Trust Score, lineage and stewardship in the same suite
- Log-based CDC from the Standard edition
- Talend Studio and Remote Engines for complex jobs in your own network
- Application and API integration as well as analytics pipelines
Limitations
Matillion limitations
- Maia Foundation supports four cloud data platforms; Azure Synapse is not supported
- Not a data quality or stewardship product
- No published prices, and warehouse compute is billed separately
- Matillion ETL customers need to migrate to Maia Foundation
Talend limitations
- No published prices and no free edition since Talend Open Studio was retired
- Quality, lineage and stewardship need Premium or Enterprise
- Broader suite with more to design and operate than a warehouse-focused tool
- Talend Studio is a separate desktop tool with its own skills and release cycle
When to choose each
Choose Matillion if
- Your analytics platform is Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or BigQuery and will stay so
- You want transformations to run in the warehouse rather than a separate engine
- Your team wants a visual designer but also SQL, Python and dbt
- You want AI agents to help build and maintain pipelines
Choose Talend if
- You integrate operational databases, applications and APIs as well as a warehouse
- Data must be validated, cleansed or masked before it reaches the target
- You need data quality, stewardship and lineage in the same product
- You already maintain Talend Studio jobs
- Processing must run on engines you manage in your own network
When neither is right
- You only need connectors that copy data into the warehouse, with transformation in dbt: see Fivetran vs Matillion and Fivetran vs Talend.
- You want a free, self-hostable platform (source-available under Elastic License 2.0): see Airbyte vs Matillion and Airbyte vs Talend.
- You need enterprise integration with master data management: see Talend vs Informatica.
- You mainly need scheduling and dependencies across existing scripts and tools: see Apache Airflow vs Airbyte.
Final recommendation
If your data platform is one of Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift or BigQuery and the job is to build and run transformations there, Matillion is the more focused tool, and its pushdown design keeps the work in the warehouse. If you need integration across many systems, transformation before loading, data quality and stewardship, or self-managed execution, Talend covers more ground. Both are quote-based, so compare written proposals for the same pipelines, and for Matillion include the warehouse compute its transformations will use.
Frequently asked questions
What happened to the Matillion Data Productivity Cloud?
Matillion renamed it Maia Foundation. Matillion describes Maia Foundation as its data integration platform (connectors, orchestration and governance) and Maia as the AI agents that build, test, run and fix pipelines on top of it.
Which data platforms does Matillion support?
Matillion's documentation lists Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery for Maia Foundation. The older Matillion ETL product also supports Azure Synapse Analytics, which is not supported in Maia.
Is Matillion ETL or ELT?
Mostly ELT with pushdown: Matillion loads data into the cloud data platform and runs transformations there. It still calls itself an ETL and data integration product, and its pipelines can also orchestrate other tasks.
Is there a free version of Talend?
No. Talend Open Studio was retired on 31 January 2024. Qlik offers trials of Qlik Talend Cloud and Talend Studio, but no free edition.
How is Matillion priced?
In credits. Matillion's pricing page says credits are consumed by task hours (the combined execution time of each task) and by additional developer users. Plans are Developer, Teams and Scale, and prices are not listed.
