Matillion suits teams that want one visual tool for loading data and transforming it inside their cloud data platform, rather than a connector service plus separate transformation code. It has no public prices and puts hybrid agents and streaming change data capture on the Scale plan, so check which plan your requirements land on before the trial ends.
Overview
Matillion builds data pipelines on a browser-based designer, with orchestration pipelines that load and coordinate work and transformation pipelines that run inside the target platform. Matillion's home page describes Maia Foundation as providing "150+ connectors, orchestration, and governance across Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, and Redshift". The designer works with Git for source control, and SQL scripts can be added as components.
Pipelines run on agents. In Full SaaS mode Matillion hosts the agents; in Hybrid SaaS mode you run the agents in your own cloud so they can reach private databases and applications. Matillion also offers a CDC agent, delivered as a container image, that captures database changes and writes them to cloud storage in near real time for loading into the target.
Key features
- Low-code pipeline designer with separate orchestration and transformation pipelines
- Transformations pushed down to run inside Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift
- 150+ pre-built connectors listed by Matillion
- Git integration in the designer for branching and team work
- Hybrid SaaS agents that run in your own cloud for private sources (Scale plan)
- Streaming change data capture through a containerised CDC agent (Scale plan)
- Maia AI agents for building and managing pipelines
Pros and cons
Pros
- Ingestion, transformation and orchestration in one visual product
- Transformations run in your existing cloud data platform
- Hybrid agents can reach private networks without opening them to the internet
- Git support for team development
Cons
- No published prices; Teams and Scale are sold through sales
- Hybrid deployment, streaming CDC, custom SSO and lineage are limited to the Scale plan
- Targets are cloud data platforms, so it is not a general database-to-database replication tool
- Product naming has changed (Data Productivity Cloud to Maia Foundation), so older guides may use other names
Pricing
Matillion sells Developer (1 developer user), Teams (5 developer users) and Scale (5 developer users) plans, each with unlimited admin users. Consumption is paid in Matillion Credits, which are used by task hours (pipeline run time) and by developer users beyond those included; fixed annual packages with included credits are offered. The pricing page publishes no prices, and Teams and Scale are sold through sales, so expect a quote. A free trial is available, and Maia can be trialled on a time-bound, fair-use basis.

Who it is best for
Data teams on Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift who want low-code ELT that covers loading, transformation and orchestration in one tool.
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams that only need managed connectors and already transform with dbt: see Fivetran vs Matillion.
- Teams that want a free or self-hosted open source tool: see Airbyte vs Matillion.
Verdict
Matillion is a good fit when you want visual pipelines that both load and transform data inside a major cloud data platform, with optional hybrid agents. Its lack of public pricing and the Scale-only placement of hybrid and streaming CDC mean you should scope requirements with Matillion early, and teams that prefer code-first transformation may get more from a connector service plus dbt.
Frequently asked questions
What is Maia Foundation?
It is the new name for Matillion's Data Productivity Cloud: the connectors, orchestration and governance layer. Maia is Matillion's set of AI agents that build and manage pipelines on top of it.
How is Matillion priced?
In Matillion Credits, consumed by task hours and by developer users beyond those included in the Developer, Teams or Scale plan. Matillion does not publish prices, so you need a quote; a free trial is available.
Can Matillion run inside my own network?
Yes, on the Scale plan. Hybrid SaaS lets you host the agents that run pipelines in your own cloud, while Matillion runs the rest of the service.
