Collibra vs Alation

Collibra Platform and Alation are the two longest-established enterprise data catalogs. Collibra leads with a governance operating model (domains, stewards, policies and configurable workflows), while Alation leads with search, curation and analyst adoption, adding governance, lineage and quality on top. Both are quote-priced and both offer a hosted and a self-hosted path, with different trade-offs.

Quick verdict

Short answer

Choose Collibra Platform if governance is a formal programme for you: owners and stewards per domain, approval workflows you design yourself, policies, reference data and privacy assessments, and lineage for regulators. Choose Alation if the first goal is getting analysts to find, trust and reuse data, with curation and certification driving adoption, and governance growing from there. Neither vendor publishes prices, and both now favour their cloud editions, so compare quotes for the same modules and confirm which features your deployment model actually gets.

How we know: This comparison is research-based: product scope, deployment models, connector delivery and pricing policy were checked on 7 November 2026 against Collibra's and Alation's websites and product documentation. We have not used either product, so nothing here is a measured result, and we do not quote prices that neither vendor publishes.

Collibra Platform (called the Collibra Data Intelligence Platform in 2024 documentation) is a modular governance suite. Its documentation lists more than 25 products and features, among them Data Catalog, Business Glossary, Stewardship, Workflow Designer, Policy Manager, Reference Data, Data Lineage, Data Quality and Observability, Data Privacy, Protect, Data Marketplace and AI Governance. Sources are reached through Edge, which processes metadata inside your network and sends results to Collibra. Collibra acquired Deasy Labs in July 2025, which became its Unstructured AI capability.

Alation, now marketed as the Alation Intelligence Operating System (AIOS), started as a search-led catalog for analysts. Its modules include Catalog, Lineage, Quality, Curation, Critical Data Manager, Data Products, Marketplace, Ontologies, Analytics, Agents and Connectors with SDKs. It runs as Alation Cloud Service, which Alation hosts and upgrades, or as customer-managed software on your own servers; Alation recommends the cloud service, and several features exist only there.

Both are independent companies and both are actively sold. Neither has been acquired, unlike several other catalog vendors in 2025 (for example Informatica, now owned by Salesforce). For an alternative that is lighter to adopt, see Atlan vs Collibra.

Key differences

Governance programme versus adoption-led catalog

Collibra is built around the idea that governance is an operating model. You define domains and communities, assign owners and stewards, and then use Workflow Designer to model how a new term, a policy exception or an access request moves through approvals. Business Glossary, Reference Data and Policy Manager hold the governed definitions, and Data Privacy records assessments. This is powerful where auditors and regulators expect documented ownership, but its value depends on people doing the stewardship work, so plan the operating model before the rollout.

Alation starts from the user who needs data today. Search, curation, certification and the knowledge that builds up around tables and queries are the core, and governance features (stewardship, Critical Data Manager, data products and a marketplace) sit on the same catalog. In our view, Alation is easier to justify where the immediate problem is "nobody can find or trust the right table", while Collibra is easier to justify where the immediate problem is "we must prove who owns and approves this data".

Deployment: Edge and self-hosted versus cloud and customer-managed

Collibra is usually bought as SaaS, with Edge doing the source-side work. A standard Edge site is created in the Edge UI and installed in your environment, on a managed Kubernetes cluster with the Edge CLI, so your team may need Kubernetes skills. A Collibra Cloud site is set up and upgraded by Collibra and connects to your sources over the internet, which avoids Kubernetes but leaves out some features. Collibra's documentation also describes Collibra Platform Self-Hosted, where you host both the platform and Edge.

Alation offers two clearer-cut models. Alation Cloud Service is hosted, administered and upgraded by Alation, which also handles backups and disaster recovery, and it is the recommended option. Customer-managed Alation runs on your infrastructure and you maintain it. The catch is feature parity: Alation's own comparison marks Intelligent Search, ALLIE AI suggested descriptions, the Alation Agent, the Chrome extension, Slack and Teams integrations and OAuth 2.0 API authentication as cloud only. If you must self-host, check that list against your requirements first.

Connectors and lineage

Neither vendor publishes a single connector count we could confirm. Collibra's integrations page names integrations such as Snowflake, Databricks Unity Catalog, Google Knowledge Catalog, Microsoft Fabric, Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio and SAP, and lineage is a separate Data Lineage product. Alation documents native connectors in support matrices plus 20 Enhanced Connectors maintained by its Forward Deployed Engineering team with partners, for sources such as Dremio, Matillion, ThoughtSpot, Microsoft SSIS and IBM i Db2; lineage is a module of the platform. For both, build a list of your critical sources, BI tools and pipelines and ask each vendor which are native, which need an add-on, and which produce column-level lineage.

Data quality, privacy and AI governance

Collibra sells Data Quality and Observability for the cloud platform and a Classic version for self-hosted use, which differ, so confirm which one a quote covers. It also has Data Privacy, Protect and Data Access products, and AI Governance with an AI Command Center for models and agents; Unstructured AI (from the Deasy Labs acquisition) extends governance to documents. Alation has a Quality module, a Critical Data Manager for key data elements, and Agents and SDKs for automation, and it positions AIOS around data and AI governance. Collibra's privacy and access products are more explicitly documented; on Alation, access controls for relational sources were in beta and cloud only on the pages checked.

Pricing and licensing

Collibra. No prices or editions are published; the product pages lead to a demo or sales contact. Because Data Catalog, Data Governance, Data Lineage, Data Quality and Observability, Data Privacy and other products are listed separately, a quote depends on which modules you include, so ask for each line to be itemised.

Alation. No prices are published; the pricing page offers a 30-minute call with sales. The documentation names plans including Enterprise and Enterprise+, which are required for AWS PrivateLink and bring-your-own encryption key on Alation Cloud Service, and mentions a Deluxe plan in connection with external vault authentication. Plan contents and prices are not public.

In both cases, request quotes for the same scope (number of sources, users, lineage and quality coverage, hosting model) so the figures are comparable.

Where each one leads

Collibra Platform strengths

  • Configurable Workflow Designer for formal approval and stewardship processes
  • Wide governance scope: glossary, reference data, policies, privacy, quality, lineage and AI governance
  • Edge keeps metadata processing inside your network
  • Self-hosted platform option documented alongside SaaS
  • Extends governance to unstructured data and AI models

Alation strengths

  • Search and curation built for analyst adoption
  • Clear choice between a vendor-run cloud service and customer-managed software
  • Enhanced Connectors cover less common sources such as Dremio, SSIS and IBM i Db2
  • Data products, marketplace and Critical Data Manager on the same catalog
  • Cloud service includes backups, disaster recovery and upgrades by Alation

Limitations

Collibra Platform limitations

  • No public pricing, and modules are quoted separately
  • Standard Edge sites need Kubernetes skills; Collibra Cloud sites lack some features
  • Data quality differs between the cloud product and the Classic self-hosted version
  • Value depends on sustained stewardship effort and an agreed operating model

Alation limitations

  • No public pricing
  • Many AI, search and integration features are cloud only
  • PrivateLink and customer-managed keys need Enterprise or Enterprise+
  • Customer-managed installs mean you run, back up and upgrade the servers

When to choose each

Choose Collibra Platform if

  • Governance is a formal programme with domain owners, stewards and approvals
  • You need policies, reference data and privacy assessments in the same tool as the catalog
  • Regulatory reporting needs documented lineage and ownership
  • You want to model your own governance workflows rather than use fixed ones
  • You also need governance for AI models and unstructured data

Choose Alation if

  • Your first goal is helping analysts find and trust data
  • You want a vendor-run cloud service with upgrades and backups handled for you
  • Some critical sources are covered only by Alation Enhanced Connectors
  • You want curation and certification to drive adoption before formal governance
  • You may need customer-managed deployment and can accept fewer cloud-only features

When neither is right

Final recommendation

Bottom line

If your organisation treats governance as a programme with owners, policies and audited approvals, Collibra Platform is the more direct fit, provided you staff the stewardship work and decide early between installed Edge sites and Collibra Cloud sites. If your first problem is adoption, getting analysts to search, curate and reuse trusted data, Alation is the more direct fit, preferably as Alation Cloud Service, since its newest features are cloud only. Both are quote-priced; shortlist your critical sources and governance processes, ask both vendors to show them working, and compare itemised quotes for the same scope.

Frequently asked questions

Do Collibra or Alation publish prices?

No. Collibra publishes no prices or editions, and Alation's pricing page leads to a sales call. Alation's documentation names Enterprise and Enterprise+ plans for some security features, but not their prices.

Can Collibra and Alation be self-hosted?

Both have a self-hosted path. Collibra documents Collibra Platform Self-Hosted, where you host the platform and the Edge site. Alation offers customer-managed Alation on your infrastructure, but recommends Alation Cloud Service and marks several features as cloud only.

What is Collibra Edge?

Edge is Collibra's source-side component: it connects to your data sources, processes their metadata inside your environment and sends the results to Collibra. You install a standard Edge site on Kubernetes, or ask Collibra to run a Collibra Cloud site, which has fewer features.

Is Collibra or Alation better for data governance?

It depends on how you govern. Collibra is built around a formal operating model with configurable workflows, policies and reference data. Alation is built around search and curation, with stewardship and governance on the same catalog. Map your own processes against both before deciding.
