Overview
Alation is a data catalog vendor whose product is now presented as the Alation Intelligence Operating System. The modules listed on its site are Catalog, Lineage, Quality, Curation, Critical Data Manager, Data Products, Marketplace, Ontologies, Analytics, Agents, and Connectors with SDKs, aimed at data governance, AI governance and governed BI.
It comes in two deployment models. Alation Cloud Service is hosted, administered and upgraded by Alation and connects to private sources through the Alation Agent. Customer-managed Alation runs on infrastructure you provide and administer. Alation's documentation says the cloud service is the recommended option and lists cloud-only features such as Intelligent Search, ALLIE AI suggested descriptions and OAuth 2.0 API authentication.

Who it is best for
Enterprises that want a widely adopted, search-led catalog for analysts and stewards, with governance and lineage added on top.
Typical use cases
- Helping analysts find trusted tables, queries and reports
- Curating documentation and certifying key data elements
- Tracing lineage across connected sources for impact analysis
- Publishing governed data products in an internal marketplace
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams that need an open source catalog they can run free: see OpenMetadata or DataHub.
- Organisations that only use one cloud platform and are content with its built-in catalog, such as Unity Catalog.
Verdict
Alation is a mature, search-led enterprise catalog with governance, lineage and quality modules, and a choice of hosted or customer-managed deployment. Its newest capabilities favour the cloud service, so customer-managed buyers should check which features they would miss, and everyone needs a quote.
