Commvault Cloud suits large enterprises with many database engines, applications and clouds that want one platform for backup, cyber recovery and long-term retention, self-managed or as SaaS. Its database coverage is among the widest listed by any vendor, but expect a quote-based subscription and a platform that takes planning to run well.
Overview
Commvault Cloud is the platform name Commvault Systems uses for its backup, recovery and cyber resilience products. According to Commvault's fiscal 2026 annual report, it can be deployed as customer-managed software, as SaaS run by Commvault, or as a hybrid, with HyperScale Grid (an integrated appliance or customer-configured infrastructure) and HyperScale Flex (compute and storage scaled separately) as on-premises options. Software follows Innovation releases (11.46 in November 2026) and Long-Term Support releases (11.44 and 11.40).
Database protection is agent-based. Commvault's supported technologies page lists enterprise databases (SQL Server, Oracle including RAC and Exadata, PostgreSQL and EDB, MySQL, SAP HANA, SAP MaxDB, IBM Db2, Sybase, Informix), NoSQL and big data systems (MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase, CockroachDB, YugabyteDB, HBase, Hive) and cloud databases (Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB and DocumentDB, Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB, Google Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner and BigQuery). The former Metallic SaaS line and the acquired Clumio service are now part of the portfolio.
Key features
- Agents for a wide range of relational, NoSQL and cloud databases, including SAP HANA, Db2, Sybase and Informix
- Deployment as customer-managed software, Commvault-hosted SaaS or hybrid, plus HyperScale Grid and Flex on-premises options
- Cloud database protection for Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB and DocumentDB, Azure SQL Database and Cosmos DB, Google Cloud SQL, AlloyDB and Spanner
- Clumio Backtrack for reverting Amazon S3, DynamoDB and Google Cloud Storage data to a prior point in time
- Cyber Recovery package with threat detection and recovery validation alongside operational backup
- Availability through the AWS and Azure marketplaces
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- One of the broadest documented database lists, covering legacy engines (Db2, Sybase, Informix) and cloud DBaaS
- Choice of SaaS, self-managed software, hybrid or appliance deployment
- Combines operational backup with cyber recovery features in one platform
- Marketplace purchasing on AWS and Azure
Cons
- Only SaaS list prices are published; self-managed software is priced by quote
- A large platform with many components to plan and operate in the self-managed model
- Several product names (Metallic, Clumio, HyperScale) can make editions and packaging hard to compare
Pricing
Commvault sells Commvault Cloud mainly as subscriptions, both SaaS and term-based software, and its fiscal 2026 10-K says the move from perpetual to subscription licensing is substantially complete (perpetual licences are still offered). Offerings are grouped into Operational Recovery, Autonomous Recovery and Cyber Recovery packages. For SaaS, Commvault publishes starting list prices on its SaaS pricing page (modified 18 August 2026; amounts shown in $ without a named currency, per month): Database Backup from $90 per TB per month (SQL Server, Oracle, Oracle RAC, SAP HANA and AWS databases; databases running on a virtual machine are not covered by this offering), Virtual Machine Backup $102.49 per 10-pack of VMs per month, File and Object Backup from $58.50 per TB per month, and Microsoft 365 Backup from $1.70 per user per month, with volume discounts above stated quantities. Self-managed software prices and licensing units are not published, so those are by quote; Commvault Cloud is also sold through the AWS and Azure marketplaces, and a free trial is offered.

Who it is best for
Large enterprises with many database engines, SAP or mainframe-era systems and several clouds that want one vendor for backup and cyber recovery.
Typical use cases
- Central backup of Oracle RAC, SQL Server and SAP HANA estates under one policy set
- Protecting Amazon RDS, Aurora and DynamoDB alongside on-premises databases
- Cyber recovery planning with isolated copies and recovery validation
- Long-term retention of database backups in cloud object storage
Who should look elsewhere
- Small teams protecting a handful of VMs, where Veeam Backup & Replication or NAKIVO may be simpler.
- Single-engine PostgreSQL or MySQL shops that only need native backups: see pgBackRest or Percona XtraBackup.
Verdict
Commvault Cloud is a broad enterprise platform whose main strength for database teams is coverage: few vendors list as many engines and cloud database services. The trade-off is complexity and pricing that is published only for SaaS, so it pays off most in large, mixed estates that can use much of the platform.
Frequently asked questions
Is Commvault Cloud the same as Metallic?
Metallic was Commvault's SaaS backup brand. Commvault now sells its software and SaaS offerings under the Commvault Cloud name, Metallic survives only in "Metallic AI", and metallic.io redirects to commvault.com.
Which databases does Commvault Cloud support?
Commvault lists SQL Server, Oracle (including RAC and Exadata), PostgreSQL, EDB, MySQL, SAP HANA, SAP MaxDB, IBM Db2, Sybase, Informix, MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase and others, plus cloud services such as Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Azure SQL Database and Google Cloud SQL.
Can Commvault Cloud run on premises?
Yes. Commvault describes customer-managed software, Commvault-hosted SaaS and hybrid deployments, with HyperScale Grid and HyperScale Flex as on-premises infrastructure options.
How is Commvault Cloud priced?
Mainly by subscription, as SaaS or term software, with perpetual licences still available. For SaaS, Commvault publishes starting prices, for example Database Backup from $90 per TB per month and Virtual Machine Backup at $102.49 per 10-pack of VMs per month. Self-managed software prices are not published, so you need a quote or a marketplace offer.
