NAKIVO Backup & Replication fits small and mid-sized teams that protect VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox or Nutanix VMs and want a light appliance-style install (including on a NAS) with SQL Server-consistent backups. Database depth is limited to SQL Server, Exchange, Active Directory and Oracle via RMAN, so it is a VM backup tool first.
Overview
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is made by NAKIVO, a backup software vendor. It protects VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE virtual machines, Windows and Linux physical servers and workstations, Amazon EC2 instances, NAS file shares and Microsoft 365, and can replicate VMs for disaster recovery. It installs on Linux, Windows or supported NAS devices (ASUSTOR, NETGEAR, QNAP, Synology, TrueNAS and Western Digital). The v11 line started in November 2024; v11.2 (March 2026) added vSphere 9 and Proxmox VE 9.0 support and v11.2.3 followed on 30 September 2026.
For databases, NAKIVO takes image-based, application-aware backups of machines running SQL Server, can truncate SQL Server logs after backup, and restores individual databases and objects to the original or a custom location. Oracle Database is protected by an integration with Oracle RMAN that schedules RMAN backups from the NAKIVO web console, available in Enterprise Plus only. NAKIVO's pages do not describe native backup for PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB, or log-based point-in-time recovery.

Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Small footprint: can run on a NAS device as a combined backup appliance
- Wide hypervisor coverage including Proxmox VE and Nutanix AHV
- Flexible licensing with both subscription and perpetual options and a published Oracle starting price
- SQL Server object-level recovery from image backups
Cons
- No native protection documented for PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB
- Oracle protection only in the Enterprise Plus edition
- Log-based point-in-time recovery for databases is not documented
- Most list prices are only available through the pricing calculator or sales
Pricing
NAKIVO sells Pro Essentials, Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Plus (contact sales) editions. Subscriptions are per workload, billed annually upfront with a 5-workload minimum, where one workload is a VM, a physical server, an EC2 instance, three workstations or one Oracle database (Enterprise Plus only); NAS and file shares are per TB of source data. Perpetual licences are per CPU socket for virtual workloads, per server or workstation in bundles of 5, per TB for NAS and per database for Oracle, with one year of support. The Oracle backup page lists perpetual Oracle licences from 165 USD per database (Enterprise Plus only); other list prices were not readable on the pricing page, which points to a pricing calculator. A 15-day free trial and a Free Edition exist.

Who it is best for
Small and mid-sized IT teams that mainly back up virtual machines and want SQL Server-consistent backups at a lower entry point than enterprise suites.
Typical use cases
- Backing up a Proxmox VE or VMware cluster that hosts SQL Server VMs
- Restoring a single SQL Server table from a VM backup
- Scheduling Oracle RMAN backups without writing RMAN scripts per database
- Running a backup appliance on an existing Synology or QNAP NAS
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams needing native, log-based backups of PostgreSQL or MySQL: see pgBackRest or Percona XtraBackup.
- Large enterprises that need SAP HANA, Db2 or broad cloud database coverage, where Commvault Cloud or NetBackup list more agents.
Verdict
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a practical VM backup product with SQL Server awareness and RMAN-based Oracle protection, priced for smaller teams and installable on a NAS. It is not a database backup tool in the wider sense: if you need native PostgreSQL, MySQL or SAP HANA protection, or log-based point-in-time recovery, look at broader suites or engine-native tools.
Frequently asked questions
Does NAKIVO back up SQL Server databases?
Yes. It takes image-based, application-aware backups of VMs and physical machines running SQL Server, can truncate SQL Server logs, and restores individual databases and tables. NAKIVO's pages do not describe log-based point-in-time restore.
How does NAKIVO protect Oracle?
Through native integration with Oracle RMAN: NAKIVO runs and schedules RMAN backups from its web console. Oracle protection is only in the Enterprise Plus edition, licensed per database (perpetual) or per workload (subscription).
How is NAKIVO licensed?
Either by subscription per workload, billed annually with a 5-workload minimum, or by perpetual licence per CPU socket for VMs, per server or workstation in bundles of 5, per TB for NAS and per database for Oracle.
