Cohesity DataProtect suits enterprises that want backup storage, deduplication and recovery on one scale-out platform with a SaaS management plane, and that protect a mix of relational and NoSQL databases. After the Veritas combination, Cohesity sells two backup products; DataProtect is the natively built one, while NetBackup serves its large installed base.
Overview
Cohesity DataProtect is backup and recovery software from Cohesity, built natively on the Cohesity Data Cloud and its SpanFS scale-out file system. It runs on Cohesity-certified hardware from partners or as a virtual edition, in public clouds, or as DataProtect delivered as a Service, a SaaS offering that Cohesity runs. Helios, Cohesity's SaaS control plane, manages DataProtect clusters and, since the Veritas combination, NetBackup domains as well.
Cohesity's datasheet lists protection for Oracle and Oracle RAC, SQL Server, SAP HANA, SAP on Oracle, SAP Sybase ASE, PostgreSQL and MySQL, plus MongoDB (with continuous data protection), Cassandra, Hive and HBase, and cloud services such as Azure SQL and Cosmos DB; Cohesity's marketplace listing adds IBM Db2. Cohesity combined with Veritas's enterprise data protection business on 10 December 2024 and announced in May 2026 that HPE resells both DataProtect and NetBackup.
Key features
- Protection for Oracle (including RAC), SQL Server, SAP HANA, SAP on Oracle, Sybase ASE, PostgreSQL, MySQL and IBM Db2
- NoSQL and big data protection for MongoDB (with continuous data protection), Cassandra, Hive and HBase
- Scale-out storage with global deduplication and compression on the Cohesity Data Cloud
- Helios SaaS control plane managing DataProtect and NetBackup from one console
- Self-managed, cloud or SaaS (DataProtect delivered as a Service) deployment
- Immutable backups and ransomware-focused recovery services on the same platform
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Wide documented database list, including SAP HANA, Sybase ASE, Db2, MongoDB and Cassandra
- Backup software and deduplicating storage on one scale-out platform
- Helios console can manage DataProtect and NetBackup together
- Choice of self-managed, cloud or SaaS delivery
Cons
- Official pages describe the capacity meter differently (front-end vs back-end TB)
- No public list prices; quote-based
- Two overlapping Cohesity backup products after the Veritas deal may complicate long-term planning
- Per-engine log backup and point-in-time options are not spelled out in the public datasheet
Pricing
DataProtect is sold by subscription, by capacity. Cohesity's page for DataProtect delivered as a Service says customers are billed on the front-end terabytes used on the data sources protected, while Cohesity's current AWS Marketplace listing describes back-end terabytes (stored data after deduplication and compression) in 10 TB blocks; the two official descriptions conflict, so confirm the meter in your quote. Self-managed DataProtect pricing is by quote through Cohesity or partners such as HPE, which resells DataProtect and NetBackup under a May 2026 alliance.

Who it is best for
Enterprises that want a scale-out backup platform with a SaaS control plane and need to protect Oracle, SQL Server, SAP HANA and NoSQL databases together.
Typical use cases
- Consolidating backup software and backup storage onto one scale-out cluster
- Protecting SAP HANA and Oracle alongside VMs under shared policies
- Continuous protection for MongoDB clusters
- Managing Cohesity and inherited NetBackup environments from one Helios console
Who should look elsewhere
- Small teams protecting a few VMs, where Veeam Community Edition or NAKIVO cost less to start.
- AWS-native estates of managed databases, where AWS Backup needs no extra infrastructure.
Verdict
Cohesity DataProtect combines backup software and scale-out storage with wide database coverage, including SAP and NoSQL systems. It is a solid shortlist candidate for large mixed estates; clarify the licensing meter and how Cohesity plans DataProtect and NetBackup to coexist before committing.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns Cohesity DataProtect now?
Cohesity, Inc. DataProtect has always been a Cohesity product. In December 2024 Cohesity also took over Veritas's enterprise data protection business, so it now sells both DataProtect and NetBackup.
Which databases does DataProtect protect?
Cohesity lists Oracle and Oracle RAC, SQL Server, SAP HANA, SAP on Oracle, SAP Sybase ASE, PostgreSQL, MySQL and IBM Db2, plus MongoDB, Cassandra, Hive, HBase, Azure SQL and Cosmos DB.
Is DataProtect available as SaaS?
Yes. DataProtect delivered as a Service is run by Cohesity and sold through Cohesity partners and the AWS Marketplace; DataProtect can also run on premises or in your own cloud account.
How is DataProtect licensed?
By capacity-based subscription. Cohesity's SaaS page mentions front-end terabytes, while its AWS Marketplace listing describes back-end terabytes in 10 TB blocks, so confirm the meter in your quote.
