SQL Backup Pro fits SQL Server DBAs on Windows who want smaller, encrypted backup files, scheduled restore tests and log shipping managed from one console, with a published per-server price. Check the requirements first: Redgate lists SQL Server 2000 to 2022, not 2025, and the 10.1 release notes have not shown a new build since July 2025.
Overview
SQL Backup Pro is a backup and restore tool for Microsoft SQL Server from Redgate Software. It replaces native BACKUP and RESTORE with its own engine and file format, adds several compression levels and 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption, and manages schedules, restores and log shipping from a Windows GUI that can register many servers. A server component on each SQL Server does the work, and the same operations are available from the command line and extended stored procedures.
Redgate's requirements page lists SQL Server 2000 SP3a to 2022 (Developer, Enterprise, Standard, Web and Workgroup editions, with limited Express support) on Windows 7 to Windows Server 2022. Backup to URL is not supported; instead, the COPYTO_HOSTED option uploads a copy of each backup to Amazon S3 or Azure hosted storage. Version 10.1.18 (June 2022) added SQL Server 2022, and 10.1.34 (July 2025) is the newest release note.
Key features
- Several compression levels, which Redgate says reduce backup size more than native SQL Server compression
- 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption of backup files
- Scheduled restore jobs that run DBCC CHECKDB to verify backups automatically
- Log shipping that queues interrupted transaction log transfers and restores them in order
- Network resilience that automatically resumes interrupted backup transfers
- Copies of backups to Amazon S3 or Azure hosted storage (COPYTO_HOSTED)
- Multi-server GUI plus command-line and extended stored procedure interfaces for scripting
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Published per-server price on the product page, unusual for this category
- Backup verification can be scheduled as part of the product, including DBCC CHECKDB
- Mature log shipping with recovery from interrupted transfers
- Backups readable by other Redgate tools such as SQL Compare Pro and SQL Data Compare Pro
Cons
- SQL Server 2025 does not appear in the published requirements
- No release note newer than July 2025 was found, so check the roadmap with Redgate
- Windows and SQL Server only; no Linux SQL Server or other database engines listed
- Backups use Redgate's own file format, so restores depend on SQL Backup Pro tooling
Pricing
Redgate sells SQL Backup Pro as a per-server subscription. The product page showed 666 USD per server for a 1 year subscription in the 1-4 server band (shown as 55.50 USD per server per month). The separate pricing page lists bands of 1-4, 5-9 and 10-19 servers, but its prices load only in the interactive cart, and 20 or more servers are quote-only; the product page labels its upper band 10+ instead, so confirm the band and price in the cart. Subscription length can be changed at checkout. A 14-day free trial is available.
Pricing checked on the vendor's official page on 7 November 2026. Prices change; confirm before buying.
Who it is best for
SQL Server DBA teams on Windows, up to SQL Server 2022, who want compressed and encrypted backups, scheduled verification and log shipping from one licensed tool.
Typical use cases
- Shrinking nightly SQL Server backup files and the time spent copying them to a file share
- Proving backups restore by running scheduled test restores with DBCC CHECKDB
- Keeping a warm standby with log shipping across an unreliable network link
- Keeping an off-site copy of each backup in Amazon S3 or Azure storage
Who should look elsewhere
- Estates moving to SQL Server 2025 until Redgate lists it as supported.
- Teams protecting several engines or whole servers, where an enterprise platform such as Commvault Cloud or Veeam Backup and Replication covers more.
Verdict
SQL Backup Pro remains a practical, clearly priced SQL Server backup add-on with real strengths in compression, verification and log shipping. Its published support stops at SQL Server 2022 and its release notes have been quiet since mid 2025, so teams planning upgrades should confirm Redgate's plans before committing.
