IBM Knowledge Catalog, now sold as watsonx.data intelligence, fits organisations invested in IBM Cloud Pak for Data, watsonx or Red Hat OpenShift that want governance, enforced data protection rules, quality and lineage in the same platform as their data science tools. Pricing is by quote, and the naming differs between SaaS and self-managed releases, so check exactly which edition a quote covers.
Overview
IBM's data catalog started as Watson Knowledge Catalog, became IBM Knowledge Catalog and, on IBM Cloud, was renamed IBM watsonx.data intelligence on 2 May 2025. IBM describes the current product as data intelligence across governance, data quality, lineage, cataloguing and data products. Catalogs and projects sit in Cloud Pak for Data, where data scientists find assets in catalogs and copy them into projects, and data protection rules are enforced automatically in governed catalogs.
It is available as SaaS on IBM Cloud (Cloud Pak for Data as a Service) and as self-managed software on IBM Software Hub, the Cloud Pak for Data base that runs on Red Hat OpenShift. In the 5.3.0 software release IBM Knowledge Catalog (including Standard and Premium editions) and watsonx.data intelligence 2.3.0 appear as related services. IBM says lineage covers more than 50 integrations, OpenLineage, custom mappings and open APIs.

- Shared catalogs and projects with Cloud Pak for Data data science and integration services
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Enforces data protection rules inside governed catalogs, not just documents them
- Same platform as IBM data science, integration and watsonx.data services
- Self-managed option on OpenShift for regulated or on-premises estates
- Lineage supports OpenLineage and custom mappings
Cons
- No public pricing; editions and names differ between SaaS and self-managed releases
- Self-managed use needs IBM Software Hub and Red Hat OpenShift skills
- Most value comes inside the IBM platform rather than as a standalone catalog
Pricing
IBM publishes no prices for watsonx.data intelligence on its product or pricing pages; both offer a free trial and a demo request. The SaaS legacy plans (Lite, Standard and Enterprise Bundle, sold under the IBM Knowledge Catalog name) could not be newly provisioned after 2 May 2025 but remain valid, with an upgrade path to current watsonx.data intelligence plans. For self-managed software, IBM's Cloud Pak for Data 5.0 services list shows IBM Knowledge Catalog Standard and Premium as separately priced editions.

Who it is best for
Organisations using IBM Cloud Pak for Data, watsonx or Red Hat OpenShift that want governance, enforced data protection, quality and lineage on the same platform.
Typical use cases
- Governing data used in watsonx and Cloud Pak for Data AI projects
- Enforcing data protection rules automatically when users access governed catalog assets
- Measuring data quality on governed assets
- Tracing lineage across IBM and third-party systems with OpenLineage
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams outside the IBM ecosystem that want a standalone catalog: see Atlan or Alation.
- Small teams without OpenShift skills that want a self-hosted catalog: see OpenMetadata.
Verdict
IBM Knowledge Catalog, now marketed as watsonx.data intelligence, is a strong fit where IBM's data and AI platform is already in place, thanks to enforced protection rules and shared catalogs and projects. Outside that ecosystem it is harder to justify, and buyers should check edition names and pricing carefully because SaaS and self-managed packaging differ.
Frequently asked questions
Is IBM Knowledge Catalog the same as watsonx.data intelligence?
On IBM Cloud, yes: IBM states that before 2 May 2025 watsonx.data intelligence was known as IBM Knowledge Catalog. Self-managed IBM Software Hub 5.3.0 still lists IBM Knowledge Catalog 5.3.0 alongside watsonx.data intelligence 2.3.0.
Can I still buy the old IBM Knowledge Catalog plans?
Not on IBM Cloud. The Lite, Standard and Enterprise Bundle plans could not be newly provisioned after 2 May 2025, though existing ones remain valid and can be upgraded to watsonx.data intelligence plans.
Can it run on premises?
Yes, as self-managed software on IBM Software Hub / Cloud Pak for Data, which runs on Red Hat OpenShift.
How much does it cost?
IBM does not publish prices on its product or pricing pages. A free trial is offered; pricing comes from IBM.
