Percona XtraBackup vs MySQL Enterprise Backup

Percona XtraBackup and MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) both take hot physical backups of MySQL InnoDB data with incremental, compressed, encrypted and cloud backups. XtraBackup is free under the GPLv2 and has series for MySQL 8.4 and 9.7 only; MEB is Oracle's commercially licensed tool, listed as part of MySQL Enterprise Edition, with a release for each MySQL server series including 26.x.

Last verified November 2026. Versions checked: Percona XtraBackup 8.4.0-7 and 9.7.2-2, MySQL Enterprise Backup 26.7 (current manual); 8.4.13. Licensing and features change; check the official sources for the latest details.

Quick verdict

Short answer

Choose Percona XtraBackup if you run MySQL 8.4 LTS, MySQL 9.7 or Percona Server and want a free, open source physical backup tool with compression, encryption and streaming to S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure or MinIO. Choose MySQL Enterprise Backup if you already pay for MySQL Enterprise Edition, run a MySQL series that XtraBackup does not cover (such as 26.7), or want Oracle-supported features such as table-level recovery, redo-log-only incrementals, OCI Object Storage and tape through Oracle Secure Backup. In both cases the tool version must match your server series.

How we know: This comparison is research-based: supported server versions, incremental methods, encryption, cloud targets, licensing and edition prices were checked on 7 November 2026 against Percona's XtraBackup documentation and GitHub repository, Oracle's MySQL Enterprise Backup user guides on dev.mysql.com and mysql.com product and pricing pages. MySQL Enterprise Backup is not sold with a separate published price, so the pricing section uses the published MySQL edition prices. We have not run either tool.

Percona XtraBackup is Percona's open source tool, licensed under the GNU GPL version 2, for hot physical backups of MySQL, Percona Server for MySQL and Percona XtraDB Cluster. It copies InnoDB data files while the server runs, records redo generated during the copy, and applies it in a separate prepare step. In November 2026 two series are maintained: 8.4 (8.4.0-7, 17 September 2026) for MySQL 8.4 and 9.7 (9.7.2-2, 4 November 2026) for MySQL 9.7. The 8.0 series reached end of life in June 2026.

MySQL Enterprise Backup is Oracle's backup tool for MySQL; its user guide calls it "a commercially licensed backup utility for MySQL databases". It offers hot backups, incremental and differential backups, partial and single-file backups, encryption, compression, direct cloud storage backup and table-level recovery. It is optimised for InnoDB but can back up tables of any storage engine MySQL supports. The mysql.com Enterprise Edition page lists Enterprise Backup as one of its components, and the Enterprise Backup page says it is "only available in select Commercial Editions". The dev.mysql.com manual selector lists 26.10, 26.7 (current), 9.7, 8.4 and 8.0.

Physical versus logical. Both tools copy data files, which restore far faster than replaying a dump for large databases but must match the server version. For small databases or cross-version moves, a logical dump is simpler: see the mysqldump guide. On Amazon RDS you cannot reach the data files: see RDS backups explained.

Key differences

Licensing and how you get each tool

XtraBackup is open source under the GPLv2 and installs from Percona's APT or YUM repositories, tarballs, source or Docker. There is no feature gating; Percona sells support and services separately. That makes it the default physical backup tool for community MySQL and for Percona Server.

MySQL Enterprise Backup is commercially licensed. Oracle's MySQL Enterprise Edition page includes Enterprise Backup as a component, and the Enterprise Backup page says it is only available in select commercial editions without naming them; the MySQL Standard Edition page does not mention it. Oracle does not publish a standalone MEB price on the pages checked, so in practice teams get it through a MySQL commercial subscription. Check your contract before deploying it on a server.

Version coverage: the practical deciding factor

Both tools tie each release to one MySQL server series. XtraBackup 8.4 supports MySQL, Percona Server and Percona XtraDB Cluster 8.4 and refuses 8.0 or 9.x servers; XtraBackup 9.7 supports MySQL and Percona Server 9.7 only. Percona documents no XtraBackup series for MySQL 9.x Innovation releases or the newer 26.x numbering, and the 8.0 series is end of life since June 2026.

MEB ships with each server series: the MEB 26.7 guide says "MySQL Enterprise Backup 26.7.0 supports the MySQL Server 26.7.x series" and is incompatible with other versions, and the 8.4 guide says MEB 8.4.13 supports the 8.4.x series from 8.4.3. If you plan to run MySQL 26.x, MEB is the only one of the two with a documented release for it today. If you stay on 8.4 LTS or 9.7, both are available.

Incremental backups and change tracking

MEB documents four ways to find changed pages. Page tracking uses a server component that records changed pages; full-scan reads all InnoDB data files; optimistic scans only files modified since the last backup; redo-log-only reads changes from the InnoDB redo log (not combinable with compression). Differential backups use the last full backup as the base. Page tracking is enabled on the server like this:

-- MySQL: enable MEB page tracking before the base backup
INSTALL COMPONENT "file://component_mysqlbackup";
SELECT mysqlbackup_page_track_set(true);

-- shell: differential (base = last full) and incremental (base = last backup)
-- mysqlbackup --incremental --incremental-base=history:last_full_backup ...
-- mysqlbackup --incremental --incremental-base=history:last_backup ...

XtraBackup supports incremental backups against a full or earlier incremental base, including page-tracking incrementals, and 9.7.2-2 improved page-tracking incrementals so unchanged page ranges are skipped. It also renamed several options in 9.7.2-2 (for example --incremental-basedir became --backup-incremental-base, with the old name still accepted with a warning), which matters if you script upgrades.

Storage targets, encryption and ecosystem

XtraBackup streams in xbstream format and its xbcloud tool uploads to Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, MinIO and Swift. Its backups are also used outside Percona: Amazon Aurora MySQL can restore a physical XtraBackup copy from S3 for migration (AWS documents MySQL 5.7 and 8.0 sources). Encryption uses AES256 with a key or key file, and compression defaults to zstd.

MEB writes single-file images or backup directories, can stream to another host, and documents backups to OCI Object Storage, OpenStack Swift, Amazon S3 and GCP storage, plus tape through Oracle Secure Backup. Its encryption is AES in CBC mode with a 256-bit key and applies to single-file and streamed images, in MEB's own format that only MEB can decrypt. It also documents redo log archiving and Group Replication support. If your organisation runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, MEB's OCI target is a natural fit.

Pricing and licensing

Percona XtraBackup is free under the GPLv2. Your costs are storage, the hosts that run it and the work to script scheduling, retention, monitoring and restore tests. Percona sells support separately.

MySQL Enterprise Backup has no standalone price on the official pages checked. It is listed as a component of MySQL Enterprise Edition, which mysql.com lists at 5,350 USD per server per year for 1-4 sockets and 10,700 USD for 5 or more sockets, including support and maintenance (MySQL Cluster CGE lists at 10,700 and 21,400 USD). MySQL Standard Edition (2,140 and 4,280 USD) does not mention Enterprise Backup on its product page, and the Enterprise Backup page says only "select Commercial Editions", so confirm which edition covers MEB with Oracle sales. These are list prices from Oracle's TCO calculator page; discounts and terms come from your Oracle contract.

Pricing checked on the vendors' official pages on 7 November 2026. Prices change; confirm before buying.

Where each one leads

Percona XtraBackup strengths

  • Free and open source (GPLv2) with no feature gating
  • Supports Percona Server for MySQL and Percona XtraDB Cluster as well as MySQL
  • Built-in zstd or lz4 compression, AES256 encryption and xbcloud uploads to S3, GCS, Azure, MinIO and Swift
  • Backups accepted by Amazon Aurora MySQL for physical migration from S3
  • Large community and wide use as a building block in other tools such as WAL-G

MySQL Enterprise Backup strengths

  • A release for each MySQL server series, including 26.x
  • Several incremental methods, including page tracking and redo-log-only
  • Table-level recovery and single-file images with encryption and streaming
  • OCI Object Storage target and tape through Oracle Secure Backup
  • Supported by Oracle as part of a MySQL commercial subscription

Limitations

Percona XtraBackup limitations

  • Only MySQL 8.4 and 9.7 series are covered; no 9.x Innovation or 26.x series documented
  • The 8.0 series is end of life, leaving MySQL 8.0 users on an unmaintained tool
  • No scheduler, catalogue or retention management built in
  • Restores need a prepare step and file-level access to the server

MySQL Enterprise Backup limitations

  • Commercially licensed; no standalone published price
  • Strict version matching to the server series, as with XtraBackup
  • Encrypted images use MEB's own format and can only be decrypted by MEB
  • Support for Percona Server or other MySQL forks is not stated on the pages checked

When to choose each

Choose Percona XtraBackup if

  • You run community MySQL 8.4 or 9.7, or Percona Server, and want no licence cost
  • You back up to S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure or MinIO
  • You plan a physical migration to Amazon Aurora MySQL
  • You have the skills to script scheduling, retention and restore tests

Choose MySQL Enterprise Backup if

  • You already have a MySQL Enterprise Edition subscription
  • You run MySQL 26.x or another series XtraBackup does not cover
  • You want table-level recovery or redo-log-only incrementals from a supported tool
  • You store backups in OCI Object Storage or on tape with Oracle Secure Backup

When neither is right

  • Your database is small or you need cross-version copies: a logical dump is simpler, see the mysqldump guide.
  • You run MySQL on Amazon RDS or Aurora, where the service handles backups: see RDS backups explained and AWS Backup.
  • You want MySQL backups streamed to object storage with binlog archiving managed for you: see WAL-G, which wraps xtrabackup (its MySQL interface is documented as unstable).
  • You want one platform for MySQL alongside SQL Server, Oracle and VMs: see Veeam vs Commvault.

Final recommendation

Bottom line

For community MySQL 8.4 or 9.7 and for Percona Server, Percona XtraBackup is the straightforward choice: free, capable and widely understood, as long as you build scheduling and restore testing around it and keep its series aligned with your servers. MySQL Enterprise Backup makes sense when you already pay Oracle for MySQL Enterprise Edition, need a supported tool for a series XtraBackup does not cover such as 26.x, or want its table-level recovery, redo-log-only incrementals, OCI and tape options. Do not buy a commercial MySQL edition only for MEB without comparing what else that edition gives you.

Frequently asked questions

Is MySQL Enterprise Backup free?

No. Oracle's user guide calls it a commercially licensed backup utility. mysql.com lists it as a component of MySQL Enterprise Edition and says it is only available in select commercial editions; there is no standalone published price.

Does Percona XtraBackup support MySQL 26.7?

Not as of 7 November 2026. Percona documents XtraBackup 8.4 for MySQL 8.4 and 9.7 for MySQL 9.7, and each series refuses other server versions. MySQL Enterprise Backup has a 26.7 release for the MySQL 26.7.x series.

Can I restore an XtraBackup backup with MEB, or the reverse?

Neither vendor documents that. Each tool has its own backup format and prepare or restore steps, so restore with the same tool and series that made the backup.

Do both support point-in-time recovery?

Yes. Both restore a physical backup and then replay MySQL binary logs to the target time or position. Keep binary logs from the backup position onward.

Is XtraBackup 8.0 still supported?

No. Percona's 8.0 documentation says the series reached end of life in June 2026, with 8.0.35-36 as the last release, and recommends moving to MySQL 8.4 and XtraBackup 8.4.
