Airbyte vs Hevo Data

Airbyte can be self-hosted for free or bought as a cloud service billed in credits, and is built around a large connector catalogue. Hevo Data is a managed, no-code pipeline service billed by events (records loaded), with in-flight transformations in Python or drag-and-drop blocks. The choice is mostly whether you need to self-host and how much you want to transform before loading.

Quick verdict

Short answer

Choose Airbyte if you need the option to self-host (or keep data inside your own boundary), want the widest connector catalogue with a builder for custom sources, or want to manage pipelines as code through Terraform or the API. Choose Hevo Data if you want a fully managed, no-code service with predictable monthly plans sized in events, built-in database CDC pipelines and the ability to clean or mask fields before they reach the warehouse. Hevo has no self-hosted edition, and Airbyte's cloud plans cost more to forecast because credit use depends on volume.

How we know: This comparison is research-based: deployment options, licences, connector coverage, transformation features, plans and prices were checked against Airbyte's and Hevo Data's official documentation and pricing pages in October 2026. We have not run either product, so nothing here is a measured result.

Airbyte is a data movement platform with more than 600 pre-built connectors, according to its documentation, plus a no-code Connector Builder. It comes as Airbyte Core (free and self-managed, under the Elastic License 2.0), as Airbyte Cloud (Standard and Plus, billed in credits; Pro, billed by capacity in Data Workers), and as Self-Managed Enterprise or Enterprise Flex, a hybrid model with data planes in your own environment. You can work through the web UI, the REST API, a Terraform provider or PyAirbyte.

Hevo Data sells Hevo Pipeline, a managed ELT and ETL service. Its documentation lists database sources such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server and MongoDB (including cloud-hosted variants), SaaS sources such as Salesforce, HubSpot and Stripe, and file stores, loading into warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift and Databricks, or into databases. Hevo supports log-based CDC pipelines, Python and drag-and-drop transformations and a Schema Mapper. It now offers two pipeline architectures, Standard and the newer Edge, and Standard pipelines can be upgraded to Edge.

Key differences

Self-hosting versus managed only

Airbyte is one of the few large ELT tools you can run yourself. Airbyte Core runs on Kubernetes; for a local install, the abctl tool creates a cluster in Docker, and the docs suggest 4 or more CPUs and 8 GB of memory. Enterprise Flex keeps data processing in your own environment while Airbyte manages the control plane. This matters when data may not leave your network or region.

Hevo Data is a managed service: Hevo runs the pipelines and you configure them in its UI. Its documentation describes Standard and Edge pipeline architectures, both run by Hevo. If self-hosting or an in-boundary data plane is a requirement, Hevo is not an option; if it is not, Hevo removes the infrastructure work entirely.

Transformations before loading

Hevo lets you transform records in flight. Python transformations work on event objects (changing properties, primary keys and data types), and drag-and-drop blocks cover common tasks such as hashing or masking fields, parsing JSON from strings and renaming fields. The Schema Mapper controls how source fields map to destination columns. Hevo's pricing page also lists dbt integration on paid plans. Note that Hevo counts events created by transformations towards your quota.

Airbyte is focused on extract and load. Plus adds field renaming, but in our view most Airbyte users will transform data after it lands, in SQL or dbt in the warehouse (the ELT pattern; see ETL vs ELT). If you must mask personal data before it reaches the warehouse, Hevo's in-flight blocks are the more direct route; with Airbyte you would select fewer columns or handle it downstream.

Pricing models: credits versus events

Airbyte Cloud Standard and Plus consume credits according to data volume: rows for API sources and GB for database and file sources. Plus sells a fixed monthly credit package with an overage rate, and Pro prices capacity in Data Workers instead, which removes the link to volume. Self-hosted Core has no licence fee, but you pay for the infrastructure and the time to run it.

Hevo plans are sized in events per month. Hevo defines an event as each record inserted, updated or deleted in the destination; its events documentation adds that rows generated by JSON parsing or transformations count, and that historical loads are not counted towards the quota. Usage above the plan's quota is charged as On-Demand events. In our view this makes Hevo easy to budget for steady volumes, while tables with frequent updates or deletes can use events faster than their row count suggests.

Connector coverage and custom sources

Airbyte lists over 600 connectors and offers a no-code Connector Builder and a CDK, so building a missing API source is a documented path, and on Core you can run your own connector images. Community-maintained connectors vary in maturity, so check each connector's support level.

Hevo lists 150+ connectors on its paid plans and fewer on the Free plan, where only sources marked as free can be used. Coverage is focused on common databases, SaaS applications and files. Check that every source you need is on Hevo's source list before choosing it, because there is no equivalent of running your own connector.

Pricing and licensing

Airbyte. Core (self-managed) is free. As listed on Airbyte's pricing page in October 2026 (USD): Standard starts at USD 20 per month with 5 credits included and extra credits at USD 5 each; Plus is a fixed credit package from 40 credits for USD 189 per month (overage USD 5.00 per credit). Pro and Enterprise Flex are capacity-based and quoted. Airbyte offers a 14-day trial with 400 credits. Credit consumption depends on volume, so use Airbyte's calculator.

Hevo Data. As listed on Hevo's pricing page in October 2026 (USD): Free costs nothing for up to 1 million events per month, up to 5 users, hourly scheduling and free sources only; Starter starts at USD 299 per month billed monthly, or USD 265 per month billed annually, for its entry tier (the page offers 5M, 20M and 50M events per month); Professional starts at USD 849 per month billed monthly, or USD 750 per month billed annually (20M, 50M or 100M events), with unlimited users and Hevo APIs; Business Critical, which adds streaming pipelines, SSO and VPC peering, is quoted. A 14-day trial needs no credit card. On the Free plan, events over the quota are held back until you upgrade or the next month starts.

Where each one leads

Airbyte strengths

  • Can be self-hosted for free, or run as a hybrid with data planes in your own environment
  • Over 600 connectors, plus a Connector Builder and CDK for missing sources
  • Terraform provider, API and PyAirbyte for pipelines as code
  • Pro plan prices capacity rather than volume, for large or growing data

Hevo Data strengths

  • Fully managed: no infrastructure to run
  • In-flight Python and drag-and-drop transformations, including hashing and masking fields
  • Fixed monthly plans sized in events, with a no-card Free plan of 1 million events
  • Log-based CDC pipelines for common databases, with the newer Edge architecture

Limitations

Airbyte limitations

  • Self-hosting Core needs Kubernetes and operational effort
  • Cloud credit use depends on rows and GB, so bills are harder to forecast on Standard
  • Little in-flight transformation; most transformation happens after loading
  • Platform and connectors are under ELv2, not an OSI open source licence

Hevo Data limitations

  • No self-hosted edition
  • Every insert, update or delete counts as an event, so busy tables can use quota quickly
  • Smaller connector catalogue than Airbyte, and the Free plan is limited to free sources
  • Streaming pipelines, SSO and VPC peering need the quoted Business Critical plan

When to choose each

Choose Airbyte if

  • Data must stay in your own network, or you want to self-host to avoid licence fees
  • You need connectors that are rare or custom, and are willing to build them
  • You manage infrastructure as code and want Terraform or API control
  • You transform in the warehouse with SQL or dbt anyway

Choose Hevo Data if

  • You want a no-code managed service with no infrastructure
  • You need to mask, hash or reshape fields before they land in the warehouse
  • Your sources are mainstream databases and SaaS apps on Hevo's list
  • You prefer a fixed monthly plan sized in events

When neither is right

  • You need the broadest managed connector list and enterprise compliance options: compare Fivetran vs Hevo Data and Airbyte vs Fivetran.
  • Your team wants ingestion as code in Git with an MIT licence: see Airbyte vs Meltano.
  • You mostly need to schedule SQL and scripts rather than move data from SaaS sources: see Apache Airflow vs Airbyte.
  • You only replicate one or two databases into a warehouse on the same cloud: the warehouse or cloud provider's native replication may be enough.

Final recommendation

Bottom line

If self-hosting, data residency or custom connectors matter, Airbyte is the clear choice of the two, because Hevo does not offer a self-hosted edition. If you want a managed service that a small team can run without engineering support, with transformations and masking before load and a fixed monthly plan, Hevo Data is the more direct fit. Before you buy Hevo, estimate how many inserts, updates and deletes your sources generate, not just how many rows they hold; before you buy Airbyte Cloud, run your real sources through its calculator or trial.

Frequently asked questions

Can Hevo Data be self-hosted?

No self-hosted edition is listed on Hevo's pricing page. Hevo runs its Standard and Edge pipelines as a managed service. Airbyte can be self-hosted as Airbyte Core or Self-Managed Enterprise.

What is an event in Hevo pricing?

Hevo counts each record inserted, updated or deleted in the destination as one event. Its documentation says rows produced by JSON parsing or transformations also count, while historical loads do not count towards the quota.

Does Airbyte have a free plan?

Airbyte Core is free to self-host. Airbyte Cloud has no free plan, but offers a 14-day trial with 400 credits; Standard then starts at USD 20 per month (October 2026).

Which tool transforms data before loading?

Hevo, through Python transformations and drag-and-drop blocks such as hashing, masking and JSON parsing. Airbyte focuses on extract and load, with field renaming on Plus; transformation usually happens in the warehouse afterwards.

What is Hevo Edge?

Hevo's documentation describes Edge as a newer pipeline architecture with an updated CDC connector, pipeline-level controls for errors and schema changes and more detailed job monitoring. Standard pipelines can be upgraded to Edge.
