IBM StreamSets suits enterprises that want a visual, centrally governed way to build many streaming and CDC pipelines across hybrid environments, with engines close to the data. It has published per-VPC list prices, but the entry package starts at USD 4,200 a month, so it is aimed at teams running dozens of pipelines rather than a single replication job.
Overview
StreamSets is a pipeline design and operations platform for streaming and batch data. Pipelines are built in a graphical designer in a SaaS control plane and executed by engines that you deploy where the data lives: in any cloud, a VPC or on premises. The Data Collector engine provides CDC origins documented as Oracle CDC (LogMiner-based), MySQL Binary Log, PostgreSQL CDC Client, Aurora PostgreSQL CDC Client and SQL Server CDC Client, plus SQL Server Change Tracking, alongside many non-CDC sources and destinations such as Kafka.
StreamSets was developed by StreamSets Inc. and later owned by Software AG; IBM bought it with webMethods and closed the deal on 1 July 2024. IBM now sells it as IBM StreamSets and also offers its streaming capability inside IBM watsonx.data integration, which brings DataStage, StreamSets, Databand and IBM Data Replication under one control plane. IBM highlights handling of schema changes and data drift as a core capability.
Key features
- Graphical pipeline designer in a SaaS control plane, decoupled from the execution engines
- Engines deployable in any cloud, VPC or on premises, close to the data
- CDC origins for Oracle (LogMiner), MySQL binary log, PostgreSQL and Aurora PostgreSQL WAL, and SQL Server CDC tables
- Handling of schema changes and data drift in running pipelines, per IBM
- Reusable pipelines and central operation of many pipelines from one control plane, per IBM
- Availability inside IBM watsonx.data integration alongside DataStage and IBM Data Replication

Pros and cons
Pros
- Published per-VPC list prices and named packages
- Hybrid model: engines run next to the data while design and monitoring are central
- CDC origins for the major relational databases alongside general streaming sources
- Part of a wider IBM data integration suite with DataStage and IBM Data Replication
Cons
- Entry package starts at USD 4,200 a month, high for small or single-pipeline projects
- Ownership changes (StreamSets Inc., Software AG, IBM) mean older documentation and offerings are being reorganised
- One-way pipelines only; no bidirectional sync or conflict handling
- Documentation site blocks automated access, so verify details in a trial
Pricing
IBM prices StreamSets by virtual processor core (VPC) at USD 1,050 per VPC per month, with access to all capabilities. Its pricing page lists a Team package from USD 4,200 a month (12 to 20 pipelines), a Business unit package from USD 25,200 a month (72 to 120 pipelines) and an Enterprise package from USD 105,000 a month (300+ pipelines). IBM marks these prices as indicative, varying by country and excluding taxes. A 30-day free trial is offered.

Who it is best for
Enterprise data engineering teams that build and govern many streaming and CDC pipelines across hybrid and multicloud environments, particularly IBM customers.
Typical use cases
- Streaming Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQL Server changes into Kafka, cloud storage or a warehouse
- Standardising many ingestion pipelines with reusable designs and one control plane
- Hybrid ingestion where engines must stay on premises or in a specific cloud region
- Feeding real-time data into IBM watsonx.data or other lakehouse platforms
Who should look elsewhere
- Small teams that need one database feed into Kafka: consider Debezium or Confluent CDC source connectors.
- Teams that want ELT from SaaS apps with per-row or per-GB pricing: see Fivetran alternatives.
Verdict
IBM StreamSets is a mature, enterprise-scale platform for designing and running many streaming and CDC pipelines with engines placed close to the data. Its published per-VPC pricing helps budgeting, but the starting package and IBM's ongoing integration into watsonx.data integration mean it fits large organisations better than small replication jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns StreamSets now?
IBM. It agreed to buy StreamSets and webMethods from Software AG in December 2023 and completed the acquisition on 1 July 2024. The product is now sold as IBM StreamSets.
How much does IBM StreamSets cost?
IBM lists USD 1,050 per virtual processor core per month. Packages start at USD 4,200 a month (Team), then USD 25,200 (Business unit) and USD 105,000 (Enterprise). Prices are indicative and vary by country; a 30-day trial is available.
Does StreamSets support change data capture?
Yes. Data Collector documentation lists CDC origins for Oracle (LogMiner), MySQL binary logs, PostgreSQL and Aurora PostgreSQL, and SQL Server CDC tables.
Is StreamSets part of IBM watsonx.data integration?
IBM describes StreamSets as providing the real-time streaming capability of watsonx.data integration, which also includes DataStage, Databand and IBM Data Replication. IBM still sells IBM StreamSets as its own product.
