How to Download & Install MySQL Workbench (Windows, Mac, Linux)

The official MySQL Workbench download is on dev.mysql.com. On 8 October 2026 it offered MySQL Workbench 26.7.0 as a Windows MSI or ZIP, a macOS DMG or ZIP for Apple silicon, Linux DEB, RPM and ZIP packages, and source code. This guide shows which file to choose and how Oracle documents the installation on each platform.

Steps and facts checked 8 October 2026 against the vendor's official documentation. Versions covered: MySQL Workbench 26.7.0 (current); 8.0.47 (end of life, archive only); MySQL 8.4 LTS and newer servers. Next review due April 2027. Menus, shortcuts and prices change between releases; check the vendor's documentation for your version.
Short answer
  • Download MySQL Workbench only from the official page, dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench. The current release is 26.7.0.
  • Windows: one 64-bit MSI installer or ZIP. macOS: ARM 64-bit (Apple silicon) DMG or ZIP only. Linux: a Debian DEB, generic x86_64 and ARM64 RPMs, and generic glibc 2.28 ZIP archives.
  • MySQL Installer is not the way to get Workbench 26: Oracle says MySQL 8.0 is the final series with MySQL Installer.
  • Workbench 26.7 supports MySQL 8.4 LTS and newer. Older 8.0 releases of Workbench are end of life but remain in Oracle's archives.
How we know: Research-based: package names, platforms and versions were checked on Oracle's MySQL Workbench download page, and installation steps against the MySQL Workbench Manual, the Oracle MySQL blog and the MySQL Installer download page on 8 October 2026. Oracle's manual still documents the 8.0 series, so the steps below are Oracle's documented 8.0 procedure applied to the 26.7.0 file names. We have not installed MySQL Workbench for this guide; if the installer screens differ, follow what the installer shows.

MySQL Workbench download: which file to choose

The official MySQL Workbench download page is dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench. Choose your operating system in Select Operating System and the page lists the packages for the current version, MySQL Workbench 26.7.0. Older versions, including 8.0.47, are on the separate archives page. Oracle suggests checking each package with the MD5 checksum and GnuPG signature shown next to it.

Install MySQL Workbench on Windows

The download page lists Windows prerequisites that must be installed before Workbench will install and run: the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 and the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2019. The manual's system requirements page names .NET Framework 4.5.2, the Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable and Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022, so install the newer packages if in doubt.

Oracle's manual documents the MSI installation as follows:

  1. Download mysql-workbench-26.7.0-winx64.msi.
  2. From an account with Administrator or Power User privileges, double-click the MSI file (or right-click it and choose Install). The manual states that installing from the MSI requires one of those privilege levels.
  3. Follow the installer pages. For the 8.0 MSI the manual describes a Setup Type page where Complete installs all features.
  4. Start MySQL Workbench from the Start menu.

MySQL Installer. Older guides recommend installing Workbench through MySQL Installer. Oracle's MySQL Installer page now says that MySQL 8.0 is the final series with MySQL Installer and that from MySQL 8.1 you use each product's MSI or ZIP archive instead, so download the Workbench MSI directly.

Install MySQL Workbench on macOS

For 26.7.0 the download page offers only macOS (ARM, 64-bit) packages, that is, builds for Apple silicon Macs, with the note that packages for Sequoia (15) are compatible with Sonoma (14). No Intel (x86_64) macOS package was listed for 26.7.0 when we checked.

  1. Download mysql-workbench-26.7.0-macos-arm64.dmg.
  2. Double-click the DMG to open the installation window.
  3. As the manual describes, drag the MySQL Workbench icon onto the Applications icon.
  4. Launch MySQL Workbench from the Applications folder.

The manual adds that Workbench supports the latest macOS version, with the previous version supported for six months after each new macOS release.

Install MySQL Workbench on Linux

On Debian and Ubuntu-style systems, download the DEB package and install it with dpkg, which is the command the manual gives for installing a package manually. On RPM-based systems such as Oracle Linux, Red Hat or Fedora, use the generic RPM with rpm -i. The manual warns that you may be told certain libraries are missing; install them first and then install the Workbench package again.

Two cautions from the manual. Your distribution's own mysql-workbench package is built by the distribution, not by Oracle, and often lags behind. And on Linux the Save password in vault feature uses gnome-keyring-daemon; Oracle's supported-platforms page describes Workbench on Linux as a GNOME application that is formally supported only on the GNOME desktop.

Debian or Ubuntu (x86_64): install the downloaded DEB
sudo dpkg -i mysql-workbench_26.7.0-1_amd64.deb
RPM-based distributions (x86_64): install the downloaded RPM
sudo rpm -i mysql-workbench-26.7.0-1.x86_64.rpm

Supported MySQL versions and the old 8.0 release

Oracle's announcement says Workbench 26.7 supports MySQL 8.4 LTS and newer, MySQL 9.7 LTS and MySQL 26.7; MySQL 8.0 and older end-of-life servers may work but are not officially supported. If you have no server yet, install MySQL 8.4 LTS or newer first, then create a connection in Workbench.

MySQL Workbench 8.0 is no longer maintained and will have no new releases. You can still download 8.0.47 from Oracle's archives, for example to open old .mwb model files, but Oracle advises users still on 8.0.47 to plan a move to 26.7. Note also that Oracle's supported-platforms page for Workbench still describes the 8.0 release, so it may not reflect 26.7 yet.
