Mockaroo is the quick option when a developer or tester needs a few thousand realistic rows, a SQL insert script or a mock API endpoint without installing anything. It does not connect to your database to mask or subset production data, so it complements rather than replaces a test data management tool.
Overview
Mockaroo lets you define a schema in the browser, choose a data type for each field (names, addresses, dates, IDs, formulas and many more), and download the generated rows as CSV, JSON, SQL INSERT statements, Excel or XML. Schemas can be saved and reused, combined with your own uploaded datasets, and extended with formulas, including functions for UUIDs and bcrypt hashes. Recent additions include AI-generated fields and schemas built from example data, and a de-identification feature.
A REST API generates data from inline field specs or a saved schema, with larger jobs run in the background on paid plans, and a separate mock API feature serves fake endpoints with controllable URLs, responses and errors. The web service is hosted on mockaroo.com; the Enterprise plan is distributed as a Docker image for a private cloud or data centre. Its creator later built Fabricate, which Tonic.ai acquired in 2025, but Mockaroo continues as its own service.
Key features
- Browser schema designer with a large library of realistic data types
- Export to CSV, JSON, SQL INSERT statements, Excel, XML and custom-delimited text
- Formulas and functions for derived values, UUIDs and bcrypt hashes
- Uploaded datasets that can be referenced from generated fields
- REST API with saved schemas and background jobs for large downloads (paid plans)
- Mock APIs that simulate back-end endpoints, responses and error conditions
- Self-hosted Docker image on the Enterprise plan
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free plan with access to all features and no installation
- Low, published annual prices for larger volumes
- Outputs SQL inserts and common file formats that load into any database
- API and mock APIs help front-end and integration work before a back end exists
Cons
- Does not read production databases, so it cannot mask or subset real data
- Free plan limits are small (1,000 rows per file, 200 API requests per day)
- The pricing page and API docs state different free download limits
Pricing
Mockaroo's pricing page lists four plans in USD, billed annually. Free: up to 1,000 rows per file and 200 API requests per day. Silver: $60 per year, up to 100,000 rows per file and 1,000,000 API records per day. Gold: $500 per year, up to 10,000,000 rows per file and 10,000,000 API records per day. Enterprise: $7,500 per year, unlimited rows, API calls and company users, self-hosted as a Docker image on a private cloud or data centre, quote required. All plans list access to all features. The API documentation also says synchronous API calls are capped at 5,000 records on every plan, background generation needs a paid plan, and free accounts are limited to 5,000 records per download, which differs from the 1,000-row figure on the pricing page.

Who it is best for
Developers, testers and educators who need realistic fake rows, SQL insert scripts or mock endpoints quickly and cheaply.
Typical use cases
- Seeding a development or demo database with realistic rows through SQL insert scripts
- Creating CSV or JSON fixtures for unit and UI tests
- Serving mock API responses while the real back end is still being built
- Producing practice data sets for SQL training and tutorials
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams that need masked or subsetted copies of production databases: see Tonic.ai or DATPROF.
- SQL Server teams that want generation driven directly by their database schema: see dbForge Data Generator.
Verdict
Mockaroo is an easy, low-cost way to produce fake data and mock endpoints, with a useful free plan and paid plans that stay cheap until Enterprise. It is a generator, not a test data management tool, so pair it with a masking product if your tests need production-shaped data.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mockaroo free?
Yes, there is a free plan with all features, up to 1,000 rows per file and 200 API requests per day. Paid plans are Silver at $60 per year, Gold at $500 per year and Enterprise at $7,500 per year.
Can Mockaroo generate SQL for my database?
It can output SQL INSERT statements for a table you define, which you can run against most SQL databases. It does not connect to your database or read its schema.
Is Mockaroo part of Tonic.ai?
Not according to the public record. Tonic.ai acquired Fabricate, a separate product built by Mockaroo, in April 2025, and Mockaroo's founder joined Tonic. Mockaroo still runs at mockaroo.com under a Mockaroo, LLC copyright.
Can I host Mockaroo myself?
Only on the Enterprise plan, which is distributed as a Docker image for a private cloud or data centre.
