Fivetran HVR suits enterprises that must run replication entirely inside their own network for large Oracle, SQL Server, Db2 or SAP sources, while buying from the same vendor as the Fivetran managed service. It is only sold on Business Critical and billed by Monthly Active Rows per destination, so model costs carefully for high-churn tables.
Overview
HVR, short for High-Volume Replicator, is described by Fivetran as a self-hosted version of Fivetran for enterprise replication of databases and file systems. An HVR Hub Server, with a repository database that stores the replication definitions, runs a scheduler that starts capture, integrate, refresh and compare jobs; optional HVR Agents on remote source or target machines connect to the hub over TLS. Capture reads source transaction logs in real time, compresses (and optionally encrypts) the changes and routes them through the hub. It is managed through a web UI, a command line and a REST API.
HVR is separate from the Fivetran managed service. Fivetran's documented deployment models for the main service are SaaS and Hybrid Deployment (processing in your network, control in Fivetran's cloud); HVR is a third route where you run the whole replication stack. For some sources Fivetran also offers High-Volume Agent (HVA) connectors, listed as an alternative to HVR, which run with SaaS or Hybrid Deployment on Enterprise and Business Critical plans. The hub runs on Linux or Windows; agents also run on AIX and Solaris.
Key features
- Log-based capture from Oracle, SQL Server, Db2 (LUW, i, z/OS), SAP HANA, SAP NetWeaver on HANA or Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Sybase ASE, Ingres and YugabyteDB
- Hub and agent architecture with compressed, optionally encrypted transfer over TLS
- Refresh (initial load) and compare jobs to load targets and verify that source and target match
- Targets including Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Azure Synapse, Teradata, SingleStore, Fabric SQL database and Kafka, as well as the relational sources
- Web UI, command line and REST API for configuration and monitoring
- Fivetran-managed licensing and usage reporting once the hub is registered
- Three-year support window for each major HVR 6 release
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fully self-hosted: data never needs to pass through a vendor cloud
- Strong source list for enterprise systems, including Db2 for z/OS, Db2 for i and SAP NetWeaver
- Built-in compare jobs to check source and target consistency
- Clear published support life cycle for each major release
Cons
- Only sold on the Business Critical plan, with no published per-row price
- MAR is counted for each destination, so fan-out to several targets raises cost
- Hub needs registration with a Fivetran account for licensing and usage reporting
- HVR 6 is not compatible with HVR 5, so older installations need a migration
Pricing
Fivetran sells HVR on a single plan, Business Critical, which allows on-premises deployment; the hub must be registered with a Fivetran account, which supplies the licence and tracks usage. Usage is billed in Monthly Active Rows (MAR), the distinct primary keys replicated from a source location, counted separately for each destination, with rate tiers applied per channel. No per-row list price is published for HVR: Fivetran points to its pricing estimator, with annual contract discounts at renewal. The older Private Deployment plan is deprecated and moves to Business Critical at renewal.

Who it is best for
Large enterprises that need high-volume, self-hosted replication from Oracle, SQL Server, Db2 or SAP into warehouses or other databases, inside their own network.
Typical use cases
- Replicating SAP on HANA or Oracle into Snowflake or Databricks inside a private network
- High-volume Oracle or Db2 replication to a cloud warehouse with source-target compare checks
- Database migrations with refresh followed by continuous capture
- Feeding Kafka from mainframe Db2 for z/OS or Db2 for i
Who should look elsewhere
- Teams happy with a managed service: the main Fivetran service or its Hybrid Deployment model is simpler to run.
- Small budgets or open source requirements: see Debezium.
Verdict
Fivetran HVR is a capable self-hosted option for large enterprise sources, with log-based capture, compare jobs and a published support life cycle. Its single Business Critical plan and per-destination MAR billing make it a premium choice, so compare it with the Fivetran SaaS or Hybrid Deployment route, which may cover the same sources with less to operate.
Frequently asked questions
Is Fivetran HVR the same as Fivetran?
No. Fivetran HVR is a self-hosted replication product you install and run. The main Fivetran service is SaaS, or Hybrid Deployment where data is processed in your network but configured and orchestrated from Fivetran's cloud.
What is the difference between HVR and High-Volume Agent connectors?
High-Volume Agent (HVA) connectors are Fivetran connectors for high-volume database sources that run in the SaaS or Hybrid Deployment models, on Enterprise or Business Critical plans. HVR is the separate self-hosted product with its own hub. Fivetran lists both as options for some sources, such as Db2 for i.
How is HVR priced?
HVR is sold only on Fivetran's Business Critical plan and billed by Monthly Active Rows: distinct primary keys replicated from a source, counted for each destination. Fivetran publishes no HVR rate, so use its estimator or ask for a quote.
Which HVR version is current?
HVR 6. HVR 6.3 became generally available on 11 December 2025 with regular support until 31 December 2028; HVR 6 is not compatible with HVR 5.x or 4.x.
