SQLyog suits Windows users who manage MySQL or MariaDB and want schema and data synchronisation, scheduled backups and SSH or HTTP tunnelling in one long-established tool, with a perpetual licence rather than a subscription. It is Windows only, and the latest release (13.3.1) dates from September 2025, so check that it covers your server versions during the 14-day trial.
Overview
SQLyog is a desktop management tool for MySQL and MariaDB made by Webyog, whose site carries Idera branding. Webyog describes it as a way to manage MySQL and MariaDB on physical, virtual and cloud servers, and lists managed services such as Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Azure Database for MySQL and Google Cloud SQL for MySQL. The commercial product is SQLyog Ultimate; a reduced Community Edition is open source under the GPL v2.
The project repository states that SQLyog runs on Microsoft Windows and may also run on Linux and Unix through Wine, with no dependency on .NET or Java runtimes. The current release is 13.3.1 (26 September 2025), which added a dark theme for the main window and fixed schema synchronisation and copy-database issues on MySQL 8.x.
Key features
- Schema synchronisation and visual data compare between databases, with generated sync scripts
- Scheduled database backups and a SQLyog Job Agent that can run jobs from the command line, with a Linux build of the agent
- Visual query builder and a query profiler for SELECT statements
- Import of external data from other sources, covered in its own knowledge base section
- Connection over direct MySQL protocol, SSH tunnelling, HTTP or HTTPS tunnelling through a PHP helper file, and SSL
- A Schema Designer for working with tables in a visual layout
Pros and cons
Pros
- Perpetual licence with a published per-user price, unusual among commercial database tools
- Schema sync, data compare and scheduled backups in the same tool as the query editor
- HTTP tunnelling helps when a host blocks the MySQL port but allows web access
- Free GPL Community Edition for basic use
Cons
- Windows only; macOS and Linux users need another client or an unsupported Wine setup
- MySQL and MariaDB only
- No new release since 13.3.1 in September 2025, so support for the newest server versions may lag
- Maintenance renewal prices after the first year are not published
Pricing
SQLyog Ultimate is listed on the Webyog store at US$299 per user for 1 to 10 users, sold as a perpetual licence with the first year of maintenance included; teams of more than 10 users are asked to request volume pricing. The store does not publish renewal prices for maintenance after the first year. A 14-day free trial of Ultimate is offered, and a free SQLyog Community Edition is published under the GPL v2 on GitHub.
Pricing checked on the vendor's official page on 7 November 2026. Prices change; confirm before buying.
Who it is best for
Windows users who administer MySQL or MariaDB servers and want schema and data sync, scheduled backups and tunnelling options under a one-off licence.
Who should look elsewhere
- Mac or Linux users: see MySQL GUI tools for cross-platform options.
- Teams that need several database engines in one tool: see DBeaver or DataGrip.
Verdict
SQLyog remains a capable Windows tool for MySQL and MariaDB administration, with synchronisation, backup scheduling and tunnelling features that many free clients lack, and a perpetual licence. Its Windows-only design and slow release pace are the main reasons to compare it with HeidiSQL, MySQL Workbench or a multi-platform client before buying.
