How to Download & Install pgAdmin (Windows, Mac, Linux)

pgAdmin 4 is downloaded only from pgadmin.org, which offers a signed Windows installer, a signed and notarised macOS app bundle, APT and RPM repositories for Linux, a Python package and a Docker container. This guide lists each official package, the platforms it supports and the install steps or commands the pgAdmin team documents, then covers the first launch and connecting to a server.

Steps and facts checked 8 October 2026 against the vendor's official documentation. Versions covered: pgAdmin 4 v9.18 (released 17 September 2026); PostgreSQL 18. Next review due April 2027. Menus, shortcuts and prices change between releases; check the vendor's documentation for your version.
Short answer
  • The official pgAdmin download page is pgadmin.org/download; the current release is pgAdmin 4 v9.18, released on 17 September 2026.
  • Windows: download and run the signed installer (Windows 10 or Server 2016 and later, 64-bit only). The EDB PostgreSQL installer for Windows also includes pgAdmin.
  • macOS: mount the disk image and drag the pgAdmin 4 app bundle to Applications; macOS 14, 15 and 26 are supported on Intel and Apple Silicon.
  • Linux: add the pgAdmin APT or RPM repository and install pgadmin4, pgadmin4-desktop or pgadmin4-web; Docker users run the dpage/pgadmin4 image.
How we know: Research-based: packages, supported platforms and commands were copied from the pgAdmin download pages and the pgAdmin 4 9.18 documentation (Getting Started, Desktop and Container Deployment, Connecting To A Server) on 8 October 2026. We have not run these installers for this guide; if a screen or command differs, follow the official page for your version.

Where to get the official pgAdmin download

Download pgAdmin from pgadmin.org/download only. The page links to one package per platform, and pgAdmin is free under the PostgreSQL Licence (see the pgAdmin review). Only recent releases stay on the main download site; older ones move to the download archive. The project releases roughly every six weeks and supports only the latest release, so install the newest version listed.

Install pgAdmin on Windows

The Windows download page lists the last three releases. pgAdmin 7.0 and later need Windows 10 (desktop) or Windows Server 2016 and above, and the installers are 64-bit only. The installer covers both the desktop runtime and the web application, and it is signed with a Microsoft-issued signing key.

  1. Open the pgAdmin 4 (Windows) download page and choose pgAdmin 4 v9.18.
  2. Download the installer from the file list for that version.
  3. Run the installer and follow its prompts; the download page's only instruction is to download and run it.
  4. Start pgAdmin 4 from the Start menu.

If you are installing PostgreSQL on the same machine, the interactive installer by EDB linked from postgresql.org already includes pgAdmin together with the PostgreSQL server and StackBuilder, so a separate pgAdmin download is optional.

Install pgAdmin on Mac

pgAdmin for macOS is a disk image containing an app bundle for both Intel and Apple Silicon. The download page lists macOS 14 (Sonoma), 15 (Sequoia) and 26 (Tahoe) as supported. The disk images and their contents are signed with an Apple-issued key and notarised by Apple.

  1. Open the pgAdmin 4 (macOS) download page and choose pgAdmin 4 v9.18.
  2. Download the .dmg file.
  3. Open the disk image in Finder and drag pgAdmin 4 to the Applications folder (or another location you prefer).
  4. Launch it from Applications.

If macOS says the app "is damaged and cannot be opened", the pgAdmin FAQ explains that this usually means the system only allows App Store apps; change Allow apps downloaded from in Security and Privacy settings.

Install pgAdmin on Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, Fedora)

On Linux, pgAdmin comes from the pgAdmin team's own APT and RPM repositories. Each offers three packages: pgadmin4 (desktop and web modes), pgadmin4-desktop (desktop only) and pgadmin4-web (web only). If you install a web package, run setup-web.sh to configure the web server. Linux Mint is not supported by the pgAdmin team.

Debian and Ubuntu (commands from the pgAdmin APT page)
# Install the public key for the repository (if not done previously):
curl -fsS https://www.pgadmin.org/static/packages_pgadmin_org.pub | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/packages-pgadmin-org.gpg

# Create the repository configuration file:
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/packages-pgadmin-org.gpg] https://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/pgadmin/pgadmin4/apt/$(lsb_release -cs) pgadmin4 main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pgadmin4.list && apt update'

# Install for desktop mode only (or pgadmin4 for both modes, pgadmin4-web for web only):
sudo apt install pgadmin4-desktop

# Configure the webserver, if you installed pgadmin4-web:
sudo /usr/pgadmin4/bin/setup-web.sh
AlmaLinux, RHEL and Rocky Linux (commands from the pgAdmin RPM page; Fedora uses pgadmin4-fedora-repo-2-1.noarch.rpm)
sudo rpm -i https://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/pgadmin/pgadmin4/yum/pgadmin4-redhat-repo-2-1.noarch.rpm

# Install for desktop mode only (or pgadmin4 for both modes, pgadmin4-web for web only):
sudo yum install pgadmin4-desktop

# Upgrade later with:
sudo yum upgrade pgadmin4

Run pgAdmin in Docker or install it with pip

The pgAdmin container runs in server mode, so you open it in a browser and log in with the email and password you set. PGADMIN_DEFAULT_EMAIL and PGADMIN_DEFAULT_PASSWORD (or PGADMIN_DEFAULT_PASSWORD_FILE) are required. Tags include latest, a specific version such as 9.18, and a major version such as 9. The container also ships pg_dump, pg_restore and psql for backups.

The Python package on PyPI is for running pgAdmin as a web application; it does not include the desktop runtime and runs in server mode on http://127.0.0.1:5050.

Run the pgAdmin container on port 80 (documented example, with placeholders)
docker pull dpage/pgadmin4:9
docker run -p 80:80 \
    -e 'PGADMIN_DEFAULT_EMAIL=user@domain.com' \
    -e 'PGADMIN_DEFAULT_PASSWORD=<your-password>' \
    -d dpage/pgadmin4:9
Install with pip in a virtual environment (from the pgAdmin Python page)
sudo mkdir /var/lib/pgadmin
sudo mkdir /var/log/pgadmin
sudo chown $USER /var/lib/pgadmin
sudo chown $USER /var/log/pgadmin
python3 -m venv pgadmin4
source pgadmin4/bin/activate
pip install pgadmin4
pgadmin4

First launch: passwords and connecting to a server

In desktop mode, pgAdmin 7.2 and later store saved server passwords in the operating system's password store, so you are not asked for a master password unless that store is unavailable. In server mode (including Docker and pip), you log in with a pgAdmin account; the first account registered becomes the administrator.

To connect to PostgreSQL, the documentation says to right-click the Servers node in the tree control and choose Register > Server. Give the server a Name on the General tab, then on the Connection tab enter the Host name/address, Port (default 5432), user name and password. Tick Save password? only if you want pgAdmin to remember it. The server's pg_hba.conf must allow connections from your machine.

For backups and restores from pgAdmin, set the folder containing pg_dump and pg_restore under File > Preferences > Paths > Binary paths. New to SQL? Continue with the SQL beginner course.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the official pgAdmin download?

On pgadmin.org/download, which links to the Windows, macOS, APT, RPM, Python and container packages and to the source code. Avoid third-party download sites.

Is pgAdmin included when I install PostgreSQL?

On Windows, the interactive installer by EDB that postgresql.org links to includes pgAdmin with the PostgreSQL server. On Linux and in Docker, pgAdmin is a separate package or image.

Does pgAdmin run on 32-bit Windows or Windows 7?

Not current versions. 32-bit Windows support ended with v4.29, and v7.0 and later require Windows 10 or Server 2016 and above.

What is the difference between pgadmin4-desktop and pgadmin4-web?

pgadmin4-desktop runs pgAdmin as a local desktop application. pgadmin4-web runs it as a web application that one or more users reach through a browser, and needs setup-web.sh to configure the web server. pgadmin4 installs both.

How do I update pgAdmin?

On Windows and macOS, install the newer package from the download page. On Linux, use your package manager, for example sudo yum upgrade pgadmin4. For Docker, pull the newer image tag.
