Short answer

Moon Modeler suits developers who want to design and document MongoDB, Mongoose, Cosmos DB or DocumentDB schemas as diagrams on their own machine, for a one-time price. It is not a relational modeller: Datensen sells Luna Modeler for SQL databases, so check which product you need before buying.

How we know: This profile is research-based: features, supported databases, editions and prices were checked against Datensen's Moon Modeler product page, pricing page, documentation and version 13.x release notes. We have not used Moon Modeler.

Overview

Moon Modeler is a visual data modelling tool by Datensen for document databases. The current product covers MongoDB, the Mongoose ODM, Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB and DocumentDB (both Azure DocumentDB and the open source engine). Datensen's documentation says Moon Modeler focuses on NoSQL and that its separate Luna Modeler is the product for relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MariaDB and SQLite; GraphQL is handled by another product, Galaxy Modeler.

It is a standalone desktop application for Windows, macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) and Linux (AppImage), and Datensen states that it does not store connections or models in the cloud. Version 13.5 added dedicated connection types for Cosmos DB and DocumentDB and requires MongoDB server 4.2 or later.

Key features

  • Reverse engineering of existing MongoDB, Cosmos DB and DocumentDB databases into diagrams
  • Generation of MongoDB $jsonSchema validation scripts and Mongoose schemas from the model
  • Diagrams with references, containment lines for embedded documents, subject areas and auto layout
  • Conversion of MongoDB projects to Mongoose models (Professional edition)
  • Export to PNG and PDF, and interactive HTML reports (HTML in Professional)
  • Custom code generation templates, data type aliases and custom properties
  • SSH and TLS connections and sub-diagrams (Professional edition)

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built specifically for document schemas, including embedded documents and validation rules
  • Low one-time price with a licence that does not expire
  • Runs locally on all three desktop platforms and keeps models off the cloud
  • Generates both MongoDB validation scripts and Mongoose schemas

Cons

  • Document databases only; relational modelling needs Datensen's separate Luna Modeler
  • No built-in team collaboration or shared repository
  • HTML reports, SSH/TLS connections and sub-diagrams require the Professional edition
  • Updates after the first year need an optional renewal whose price is not published

Pricing

Datensen lists Moon Modeler 13 at $99 USD for the Basic edition and $169 USD for the Professional edition, as one-time purchases with a licence that does not expire; an upgrade from Basic to Professional is $69 USD. The first year of updates is included and renewal after that is optional (no renewal price is published). A licence is personal to one user on unlimited devices, and a 14-day free trial needs no credit card.

Who it is best for

Developers and small teams designing, reverse-engineering and documenting MongoDB or Mongoose schemas on their own machines.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Relational or mixed SQL and NoSQL modelling: see Hackolade or the ER diagram tools guide.
  • Teams that need shared models with review and version history inside the tool.

Verdict

Our take

Moon Modeler is a focused, inexpensive desktop modeller for MongoDB-family databases, with reverse engineering and script generation at a one-time price. It does not cover relational databases or team collaboration, so it fits individual developers and small teams rather than enterprise modelling programmes.
