Short answer

LanceDB fits teams that want vector search without running a database server: the library runs in-process and keeps data in Lance files on disk or object storage, which also suits multimodal and training data. Open source use is free; for a managed or distributed deployment you need LanceDB Enterprise, which is quote-only, since no self-serve cloud plan is currently documented.

How we know: This profile is research-based: licence, offerings, index types, full-text and hybrid search, embedding functions and rerankers were checked on 7 November 2026 against LanceDB's official documentation (docs.lancedb.com overview, indexing, hybrid search, embedding and Enterprise pages), its website and the lancedb/lancedb GitHub repository. We have not run LanceDB or measured its performance.

Overview

LanceDB is an open source retrieval library that runs inside your application process, so there is no separate database server to deploy; the documentation calls this LanceDB Embedded. It is built on Lance, an open columnar data format, and stores tables on local disk or in object storage. SDKs are available for Python, TypeScript and Rust, with a REST API for Enterprise. Beyond vector search it supports full-text search, hybrid search, reranking, filtering and SQL over the same tables, which is why LanceDB now positions itself as a multimodal lakehouse for AI data.

The vector indexes are IVF-based: IVF_FLAT, IVF_PQ, IVF_RQ and IVF_SQ, plus IVF_HNSW_SQ, IVF_HNSW_FLAT and IVF_HNSW_PQ, which combine IVF partitions with HNSW graphs; scalar indexes (BTREE, BITMAP, LABEL_LIST) speed up filters. An embedding registry can embed data automatically at insert and query time, and hybrid search fuses vector and BM25 results with RRF by default or another reranker. LanceDB Enterprise is the distributed, managed option, deployed as Managed, BYOC or custom on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.

Key features

  • Embedded, in-process operation with no database server, on Python, TypeScript and Rust
  • Tables stored in the open Lance columnar format on local disk or object storage
  • IVF_FLAT, IVF_PQ, IVF_RQ, IVF_SQ and IVF_HNSW (SQ, FLAT, PQ) vector indexes, plus BTREE, BITMAP and LABEL_LIST scalar indexes
  • BM25 full-text search index and hybrid search with RRF, linear combination or model-based rerankers
  • Embedding registry with providers such as OpenAI, Sentence Transformers and Cohere that embeds data at insert time
  • SQL and filtering over the same tables used for vector search
  • LanceDB Enterprise: distributed deployment as Managed, BYOC or custom on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No server to run: the library and its data files live with your application
  • Open Lance columnar format on local disk or object storage, usable for analytics and training data as well as search
  • Hybrid search, full-text search and SQL over the same tables
  • Apache 2.0 licence for the library and the format

Cons

  • No published self-serve cloud plan or free tier; managed use means a LanceDB Enterprise contract
  • Some indexes (IVF_SQ, IVF_HNSW_FLAT, IVF_HNSW_PQ) are built only by the embedded library, not by Enterprise deployments
  • Provider-specific rerankers are Python-only; TypeScript and Rust get RRF and a generic interface
  • Multitenancy features are not documented for the embedded library

Pricing

LanceDB Embedded (open source) is free under Apache 2.0. LanceDB Enterprise is sold by contacting LanceDB, as a Managed deployment run by LanceDB, a BYOC deployment in your own AWS, Google Cloud or Azure account, or a custom deployment; no list prices are published. No self-serve LanceDB Cloud plan, free tier or published usage rate was found on the official site or docs on 7 November 2026: the former LanceDB Cloud documentation page returns 404 and the current docs describe only Embedded and Enterprise.

Who it is best for

Python, TypeScript or Rust applications and data pipelines that want embedded vector and hybrid search over data kept in an open columnar format, without operating a database server.

Typical use cases

  • Embedded RAG retrieval inside a desktop, edge or server application
  • Multimodal datasets (images, video, text) stored and searched in Lance format on object storage
  • Hybrid keyword and vector search in data pipelines and notebooks
  • Feature engineering and training data curation alongside vector search

Who should look elsewhere

  • Teams that want a self-serve managed vector service with published prices: compare Pinecone, Zilliz Cloud or Qdrant Cloud.
  • Many independent services that need a shared network database with per-tenant isolation, where a server such as Weaviate fits better.

Verdict

Our take

LanceDB is the clearest embedded option in this group: an in-process library on an open columnar format, with IVF and IVF-HNSW indexes, hybrid search and SQL. It is free to use, but buyers who want a managed service should note that only LanceDB Enterprise, sold by quote, is currently documented.

Frequently asked questions

Is LanceDB a database server?

Not in its open source form. LanceDB Embedded runs inside your application process and reads and writes Lance files on local disk or object storage. LanceDB Enterprise adds a distributed, managed deployment.

Is LanceDB Cloud still available?

As of 7 November 2026 the LanceDB documentation lists only LanceDB Embedded and LanceDB Enterprise (Managed, BYOC or custom), and the former LanceDB Cloud docs page returns 404. We found no official retirement notice, so ask LanceDB directly if you need a hosted plan.

Which index types does LanceDB support?

Vector indexes IVF_FLAT, IVF_PQ, IVF_RQ, IVF_SQ, IVF_HNSW_SQ, IVF_HNSW_FLAT and IVF_HNSW_PQ, scalar indexes BTREE, BITMAP and LABEL_LIST, and an FTS index with BM25 ranking.

How much does LanceDB cost?

The open source library is free under Apache 2.0. LanceDB Enterprise is priced by contacting LanceDB; no list prices are published.
