Short answer

Datadog Database Monitoring fits teams already on Datadog who want query performance next to infrastructure and application data in one place. It is SaaS only and priced per database host on top of other Datadog products, and it carries fewer DBA estate features (backups, jobs, licence inventory) than dedicated monitors.

How we know: This profile is research-based: supported engines, collected data, retention and pricing were checked on 7 November 2026 against Datadog's Database Monitoring documentation, its data collected page and its pricing list. We have not installed the Datadog Agent or measured its overhead.

Overview

Database Monitoring (DBM) is Datadog's database module. Datadog documents it for self-hosted and managed Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, Amazon DocumentDB and ClickHouse, with managed options such as Amazon RDS and Aurora, Google Cloud SQL and AlloyDB, Azure, Heroku, Supabase, Oracle Autonomous Database, MongoDB Atlas and ClickHouse Cloud.

You install the Datadog Agent and configure each database for collection; the Agent sends normalised query metrics, individual query samples, explain plans and host metrics to Datadog's cloud. Datadog's documentation states that query metrics are retained for 15 months and query samples for 15 days. The data sits alongside Datadog infrastructure monitoring and APM, so a host view can show the services that call a database.

Key features

  • Normalised query metrics with history, filterable by host, team, user and other tags
  • Query samples for individual executions, attributed to a user, application or client host
  • Explain plans with tracking of plan changes over time
  • Databases page with host health, configuration, common blocking queries and calling services
  • Recommendations page that flags problems and optimisation opportunities
  • Custom metrics from your own tables through custom_queries in the Agent configuration
  • Alerts on query performance trends, including anomaly alerting

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Query data linked with Datadog infrastructure and APM in one platform
  • Broad engine list, including MongoDB, DocumentDB and ClickHouse
  • Published per-host prices
  • Long query metric retention (15 months)

Cons

  • SaaS only; monitoring data leaves your network
  • Per-host charge adds to other Datadog products, so total cost needs modelling
  • Fewer DBA estate features such as backups, jobs and licence inventory than dedicated monitors (editorial)
  • Query samples are kept for only 15 days

Pricing

As listed on Datadog's pricing list on 7 November 2026, Database Monitoring costs $70 per database host per month billed annually, or $84 billed month-to-month or on demand (the US site shows the dollar sign without a currency code). This is charged on top of any other Datadog products you use, such as infrastructure monitoring or APM.

Who it is best for

Verdict

Our take

Datadog Database Monitoring is a practical choice when Datadog is already your observability platform, because query metrics, samples and plans join the data you already have. As a stand-alone database monitor it is less DBA-focused than dedicated tools, and per-host pricing on top of other Datadog products needs budgeting.
