Aerospike fits real-time systems such as ad tech, fraud detection and personalisation that need predictable low-latency key access over large datasets. The free Community Edition is capped at 8 nodes and 2.5 TB and lacks cross-datacenter replication, strong consistency and transactions, so most production estates end up on Enterprise, which is priced by data volume through a quote.
Overview
Aerospike organises data into namespaces, sets, records and bins with a flexible schema. A distributed hash algorithm assigns partitions to nodes, so there is no master node and no sharding to configure. By default primary and secondary indexes are kept in RAM while values can live in RAM or on SSDs, configured per namespace; the primary index can also sit on persistent memory or NVMe. Replication within the cluster follows a configured replication factor, synchronous for writes that need immediate consistency, and cross-datacenter replication (XDR) keeps remote clusters ready to take over.
The database supports key-value, document and graph models (Aerospike Graph is a separate graph product), with open source clients for C, Java, Go, C#, Python and Node.js. Connectors cover Kafka, Pulsar, JMS, Trino and Spark, under additional licensing. Aerospike Database 8.2.0 was released on 29 September 2026. Aerospike Cloud runs Enterprise Edition as a managed service; its page lists AWS, with self-service Google Cloud deployment described as coming soon.
Key features
- Hybrid storage: indexes in RAM (or persistent memory or NVMe) with data on SSD or RAM, per namespace
- Automatic hash-based data distribution with no master node
- Cross-datacenter replication (XDR) in Enterprise Edition
- Strong consistency mode and transactions with additional Enterprise licensing
- Key-value, document and graph models, with Aerospike Graph as a separate product
- Connectors for Kafka, Pulsar, JMS, Trino and Spark
- Kubernetes Operator and security features (TLS, ACLs, Vault, FIPS 140-2) in Enterprise Edition
Integrations and ecosystem
Pros and cons
Pros
- Architecture designed around RAM indexes and SSD data for large, latency-sensitive workloads
- No master node and no manual sharding
- Enterprise pricing based on data volume rather than cores or operations
- Free Community Edition allowed in production
Cons
- Community Edition caps (8 nodes, 2.5 TB, 2 namespaces) and lacks XDR, strong consistency and transactions
- Enterprise, add-ons and Aerospike Cloud prices are all by quote
- Connectors need additional licensing even on Enterprise
- Aerospike Cloud self-service was limited to AWS when checked
Pricing
Community Edition is free for production and non-production use, with limits of 8 nodes, 2.5 TB of data per cluster and 2 namespaces, and no cross-datacenter replication, strong consistency or transactions. Enterprise Edition is priced by quote: Aerospike says it charges mainly by the volume of unique (non-replicated) production data and the number of active production clusters, plus a fixed percentage uplift for add-ons, not by operations, servers or cores; non-production use is free under a commercial licence. Strong consistency, transactions, multi-site clustering, LDAP and encryption at rest need additional licensing or Enterprise Edition Plus. Aerospike Cloud has an annual price based on unique data stored, by quote; its page shows only indicative hourly examples.

Who it is best for
Real-time platforms (ad tech, fraud detection, payments, personalisation) that need consistent low-latency key-value access over terabytes of data.
Typical use cases
- Ad tech bidding and user profile lookups
- Real-time fraud detection and risk scoring
- Personalisation and recommendation feature stores
- Session and identity stores with cross-datacenter failover
Who should look elsewhere
- Applications that need rich ad hoc queries or SQL joins: see SQL vs NoSQL.
- Small projects that only need a cache, where Redis is simpler.
Verdict
Aerospike is a specialist database for high-throughput, low-latency key access at scale, with a pricing model tied to data volume rather than hardware. The Community Edition is useful for evaluation and smaller systems, but production features such as cross-datacenter replication, strong consistency and transactions sit behind Enterprise licensing that you must quote.
Frequently asked questions
Is Aerospike free?
The Community Edition is free for production and non-production use under AGPLv3, limited to 8 nodes, 2.5 TB per cluster and 2 namespaces, without XDR, strong consistency or transactions. Enterprise Edition is paid.
How is Aerospike Enterprise priced?
By quote. Aerospike says it charges mainly by unique production data volume and active production clusters, plus a percentage uplift for add-ons, and not per operation, server or core. Non-production use is free under a commercial licence.
Does Aerospike support transactions?
Not in Community Edition. In Enterprise Edition, transactions and strong consistency are available with additional licensing or in Enterprise Edition Plus.
Which clouds does Aerospike Cloud support?
Its product page names AWS, with self-service Google Cloud deployment described as coming soon. Pricing is an annual amount based on unique data stored, by quote.
