- SQL Server Express is free and licensed for production use; in SQL Server 2025 the limit per database is 50 GB (10 GB in SQL Server 2022 and earlier).
- Each Express instance uses at most 1,410 MB of buffer pool memory and the lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores, whatever the hardware.
- Express has no SQL Server Agent, so scheduled jobs and maintenance plans need Windows Task Scheduler or a paid edition.
- Download it only from Microsoft: the SQL Server downloads page links the SQL2025-SSEI-Expr.exe installer on the Microsoft Download Center.
- Outgrow it with an in-place Edition Upgrade to Standard or Enterprise from the SQL Server Installation Center; no reinstall is needed.
What is SQL Server Express?
SQL Server Express (often searched as SQL Express or Microsoft SQL Server Express) is the entry-level, free edition of SQL Server. Microsoft's downloads page describes it as "ideal for development and production for desktop, web, and small server applications", which is the main difference from the free Developer editions: those are licensed for development and test only. Microsoft's container documentation says the same thing from the other side: you can obtain a free SQL Server Express production licence.
SQL Server 2025 changed Express in two ways. The maximum database size rose to 50 GB, and the separate "Express with Advanced Services" download was merged into a single Express edition, so Full-Text Search and the other former Advanced Services features are now part of standard Express. The Download Center notes that the Express package contains PolyBase and Full Text Search in addition to the Database Engine.
Express also has a lighter sibling, LocalDB, which runs in user mode with zero configuration and suits developers who only need a database from code. In SQL Server 2025 LocalDB is included with the Express download. If you are deciding between the free editions, see SQL Server Express vs Developer.
SQL Server Express limits: database size, memory and CPU
The limits below come from Microsoft's "Editions and supported features" pages for SQL Server 2025 and 2022. They apply per instance (memory, CPU) or per database (size), and they are enforced by the engine regardless of how much hardware the server has.
| Limit | Express 2025 (17.x) | Express 2022 (16.x) | Standard 2025, for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum relational database size | 50 GB | 10 GB | 524 PB |
| Compute per instance | Lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores | Lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores | Lesser of 4 sockets or 32 cores |
| Buffer pool memory per instance | 1,410 MB | 1,410 MB | 256 GB |
| Columnstore segment cache | 352 MB | See the 2022 page | 32 GB |
| SQL Server Agent | No | No | Yes |
| Backup compression | No | No | Yes |
| Transparent data encryption (TDE) | No | No | Yes |
What the limits mean in practice
- The 50 GB cap is per database (Microsoft lists it as the maximum relational database size), so an instance can hold several databases, each up to the limit.
- 1,410 MB of buffer pool is the data cache. A server with 32 GB of RAM still gives Express this amount for cached pages, so large working sets read from disk more often.
- No SQL Server Agent means no scheduled jobs inside SQL Server. Backups and index maintenance have to be scheduled outside the engine, for example with Windows Task Scheduler running
sqlcmd. - Batch mode parallelism is limited to a degree of parallelism of 1 for Express, according to the 2025 editions page.
SQL Server Express download: where to get it
Download SQL Server Express only from Microsoft. The SQL Server downloads page has a "SQL Server 2025 Express" panel with a Download now button, which leads to the Microsoft Download Center entry for Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Express. On 8 October 2026 that entry listed version 17.0.1000.9 and a 4.4 MB file named SQL2025-SSEI-Expr.exe. This small file is an installer that downloads the actual setup files.
Microsoft introduced this installer with three choices: Basic installs the Database Engine with default settings, Custom starts the full SQL Server Installation Center, and Download Media saves the setup files so you can run setup later or on a computer without internet access. Microsoft described these options when the installer was launched for SQL Server 2016; check the screens in your version, as labels can change.
Older versions. People still search for a SQL Server 2019 Express download, usually because an application names that version. Microsoft's lifecycle table lists mainstream support for SQL Server 2019 ending in 2025 and extended support in 2030, and the 2019 Express limit is 10 GB per database. For a new installation, SQL Server 2025 Express gives five times the database size; use an older version only when the vendor of your application requires it.
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or later, Windows Server 2019 or later (Windows 11 Home and Pro are listed for Express) |
| Processor | x64 only, 1.4 GHz minimum, 2.0 GHz or faster recommended |
| Memory | 512 MB minimum, 1 GB recommended for Express editions |
| Disk space | At least 6 GB free on the system drive during setup |
| .NET Framework | 4.7.2 |
How to install SQL Server Express, step by step
The Basic option needs few decisions: accept the licence terms, choose an install location and select Install. Choose Custom when you want to set the instance name, authentication mode or data folders yourself. Microsoft's Installation Wizard documentation describes these pages in order:
- Installation Center: select Installation, then New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation.
- License Terms: select I accept the license terms and Privacy Statement, then Next.
- Global Rules, Product Updates and Install Rules: setup checks the computer and offers critical updates. If a rule fails, select it in the Status column to see why.
- Azure Extension for SQL Server: selected by default in SQL Server 2025; clear it if you do not want to connect the instance to Azure.
- Feature Selection: select Database Engine Services. LocalDB is also offered here.
- Instance Configuration: choose a default or named instance. Microsoft advises that any application that installs SQL Server Express should use a named instance.
- Database Engine Configuration: choose Windows Authentication or Mixed Mode. Mixed Mode enables the
salogin and requires a strong password. Select Add Current User so your Windows account is an administrator. - Ready to Install, then Complete: a Successful status confirms the install, and the page links to the summary log.
Setup writes its logs under %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\<nnn>\Setup Bootstrap\Log; Summary.txt is the first file to read if anything fails. For the full wizard, the Developer edition and Linux, see the step-by-step guide to installing SQL Server listed under related guides below.
Install SSMS and connect to SQL Express
Express installs the engine only. To manage it with a graphical tool, install SQL Server Management Studio separately. SSMS 22 is installed through the Visual Studio Installer: the download is a stub, vs_SSMS.exe, and there is no standalone MSI. SSMS 22 works with SQL Server 2014 and later. If you prefer a lighter editor, the MSSQL extension for VS Code also connects; see SSMS vs VS Code.
In the SSMS Connect to Server dialog, enter localhost\<instance-name> as the server name: Microsoft notes that if you are not using the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) you must enter the server name and the instance name. Keep Windows Authentication unless you enabled Mixed Mode. The Encrypt setting defaults to Mandatory; on a local test instance with a self-signed certificate you may need to tick Trust Server Certificate.
Server=localhost\<instance-name>;Database=mydb;Integrated Security=true;Encrypt=true;TrustServerCertificate=trueServer=(localdb)\MSSQLLocalDB;Integrated Security=trueCommon SQL Express connection errors
Most problems after a successful install come from how named instances are reached over the network. Named instances, including SQL Server Express, use dynamic TCP ports by default, and clients find the port through the SQL Server Browser service on UDP port 1434.
- Server not found or not accessible (error 53): check the instance name, that the SQL Server service is running, and that SQL Server Browser is running. For connections from another computer, TCP/IP may need enabling in SQL Server Configuration Manager; Microsoft notes that the Database Engine must be restarted after a protocol change, and for Express the Browser service too.
- Connection refused (error 10061): the client reached the computer but nothing listened on the port, often because the port changed or the service stopped.
- Login failed for user (error 18456): typically
sawas used while the instance runs in Windows Authentication mode only. Microsoft documents changing the mode on the Security page of the server properties in SSMS, followed by a restart. If Windows Authentication was chosen at setup, thesalogin stays disabled even after the switch; you enable it and set a new password withALTER LOGIN. Microsoft advises not enablingsaunless your application needs it. - Cannot open database (error 4060): the database in the connection string does not exist or the login has no access to it.
When to upgrade from SQL Server Express, and how
Consider moving off Express when a database approaches 50 GB, when the 1,410 MB buffer pool causes constant disk reads, or when you need SQL Server Agent jobs, backup compression or Transparent Data Encryption. The usual next step is Standard edition; see SQL Server Express vs Standard for the differences and cost.
The upgrade is done in place. Microsoft's SQL Server 2025 upgrade matrix lists Express as upgradable to Enterprise, Developer or Standard. The documented steps are: run setup.exe from the target edition's media, in the SQL Server Installation Center select Maintenance, then Edition Upgrade, enter the product key, select the instance and choose Upgrade. Setup restarts the SQL Server services, so plan for a short outage.
After upgrading from Express, Microsoft lists extra steps: enable the SQL Server Agent service in Windows Services and configure its service account in SQL Server Configuration Manager, and review accounts such as the BUILTIN\Users group that Express configured. Take a full backup before you start.
